Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
A New Champion.
Played over the long Weekend, on the Monday defending Major singles Champion Brett Frame took on his younger challenger, up and coming Mick Went. Both bowlers have a huge amount of respect for each other. Mick Went ended up winning 31- 21. All members of the club would like to thank these two skilled bowlers for the way they played this and the lead up games. It’s hoped Mick will take his good form and along with two other club bowlers, challenge for a state title in a Triples contest.
The Magnificent 7’s.
12 bowlers, that’s three teams made up of four bowlers….friends, wife’s and supporters travelled to Dubbo over the weekend to compete in the Zone 4, Number 7 Pennant playoffs. In pennants, it’s a team contest so skill and camaraderie play an equal part in how a team performs. The 7’s eagerly looked forward to the event after having won the right to represent the district.
On Saturday firstly, in the morning Parkes 68 crushed Cobar 55. In the afternoon, Parkes 66 dashed the hopes of Dunedoo 43. Most of the players again spent the night in Dubbo and enjoyed the evening, recapping the day’s highlights. Team bonding again proved to be one of the reasons offered for how well they had played.
On Sunday, it would be needed along with a good amount of skill when they went up against Nyngan. After 22 ends Parkes were behind 21-16. Supporters in Parkes received updates via text messages and facebook. Nyngan 34 –Parkes 28. It continued to be tight. After 40 ends Nyngan 38-Parkes 36. Then Parkes took the lead 39-38…Facebook updates were coming through thick and fast. Then after 52 ends the lead changed back Nyngan 47 – Parkes 46. The players would have to call on all their skill and nerve now.
With only 2 ends left, Parkes were in the lead again Parkes 57 – Nyngan 52. As all bowlers know and have learnt the hard way, a game of bowls isn’t over until hands have been shaken and glasses raised. A lead of only 5 points can disappear in one bowl. However as had been the case all weekend, the Parkes players dug deep and managed to pull further ahead to win Parkes 61 – Nygnan 53. Woohooo!
The 7’s have triumphantly won the right to play West Dubbo this Saturday in Dubbo, for the opportunity to go through to the state finals. Some players were so excited they were tempted to spend the whole week in Dubbo, in camp, preparing like the state of origin players do, until it was pointed out to them…did they really want to spend a whole week in Dubbo. Good point! Yes, the banter and the friendly digs between the two towns has started. The whole club would like to acknowledge the achievements of the Sevens and wish them and the Dubbo players all the best this coming Saturday.
Saturday Bowls.
Last Saturday at the club a friendly round of bowls was played against the Railway club, to give the Railway Pennant 6’s a practise game. In the weeks ahead they will be competing for a Zone title. Good luck! The green was full of characters and both clubs commented on how they wished more people might come along to either club and experience the joy of bowls.
In club news.
Players are being encourage to get their names down for men’s minor and major triples teams now. The draw will be made at the end of the month and you are able to and encouraged to play the games from that point on. So all players can enter and take the opportunity to enjoy a team contest and experience a bit of the camaraderie that has served the magnificent 7’s so well.

Can you hear me Major Tom???
