Social Bowls.
Thursday, September 15.
Twenty two players contested four games of Pairs and one Triples.
In the closest game of the day Steve Ryan and Bill Skinner trailed early but after ten had a six shoot lead ( the biggest lead of the match - 11-5), over John Ward and Gladrin Sun. With one end to play John and Gladrin had reduced the lead to two shots and won the last end but could only score one shot on the end. Steve and Bill claimed a very narrow 19-18 victory.
Tom Furey and Rob Irving had the better of the early ends to lead John Corcoran and Martin Tighe 10-3 after seven ends. From there on John and Martin got back in to the game and after of the sixteenth end had the lead 17-15. Starting the last end John and Martin lead 20-19 but Tom and Rob played great bowls to win the last end by four shots and the match 23-20.
Other Pairs matches went to Greg Howlett and John Watson over Col Mudie and Les Kent while John Hodge and Gordon Dickson had a win over Dave Buggie and Joe Crowley.
In a fairly close Triples match, after the scores were level 2 all going in to the fifth end, Keith MacRae, John Dunn and Jim Blake lead all the way to score a 19-13 win against Joe Davies, Ray Jones and Bob Freeman.
Prize winners were John Hodge and Gordon Dickson and the Runners Up prize went to Steve Ryan and Bill Skinner.
Saturday, September 18.
Twenty six players turned out to play five games of Pairs and one of Triples.
The Triples match proved to be the closest of the day. After six ends Wally Grant, John Dunn and Bob Freeman had a 9-0 lead over Ron Hornery, John Taylor and John Watson. By the end of the fourteenth end the scores were level at 12 all. Wally’s team scored two shots on the next ends but Ron’s team managed to score six shots to lead 18-14 with five ends to play. Wally’s team won four of those five ends to run out winners 21-19.
In a rather unusual Pairs match, Tom Furey and Ray Jones just had the better of the first twelve ends to lead Col Mudie and Ted Wright 12-11. I don’t know what happened but maybe Col and Ted had a couple of rums before the start of the thirteenth end but whatever they did seemed to work – they won all of the last nine ends to win the match 28-12 ( or did one of the opposition players withdraw due to illness?).
Other winning Pairs were:
Keith Macrae and Gladrin Sun against John Ward and Jim Blake.
Steve Ryan and Gordon Dixon against John Carr and Chris Dunn.
Joe Davies and Rob Irving against Dave Johnson and Joe Crowley.
John Hodge and Rhona Went against Liz Byrne and Bill Skinner.
Prizes were won by the Triples team of Wally Grant, John Dunn and Bob Freeman. And the Pairs team of John Hodge and Rhona Went.
