Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The first match of the 2017 Club Minor Triples championship was played on Saturday, Sept. 2.
The team of Wally Grant, Rob Irving and John Watson played great bowls to win the first six ends and lead Steve “Nimo” Mills, Bernie Mitchell and George Bradley 11-0. “Nimo’s team won three of the next four ends and the lead was cut to five shots, 14-9 and a comeback looked to be on the cards but with John and Rob setting up the heads with some great bowls the Skip, Wally Grant had a fairly easy day and his team advanced to the second round with a convincing 33-17 win..

Thursday, August 31.
A good field of 28 players turned out to play seven games of Pairs, with a couple of fairly close games and some not so close.
In a very evenly contested match, in which fourteen of the twenty-one ends ended up with single shot results, John Ward and Jim Blake won six of the first nine ends to open up a lea of seven shots (10-3) against Greg Howlett and Martin Tighe. By the start of the seventeenth end the lead had been reduced to one shot and John and Jim led 12-11. Scoring single shots on each of the next four ends John and Jim appeared to have the match won when they had opened up the lead again to 16-11. On an exciting last end Greg and Martin managed to score seven shots to win the match 18-16.
Mal Porter and Gladrin Sun scored a single shot to win the first end against Ted Wright and Bob Freeman. By the end of the seventh end Ted and Bob had built a lead of 12-1. Mal and Gladrin fought back well and with three ends to play
Ted and Bob had a slender one shot lead, 16-15. Over the last three ends, Ted and Bob scored five shots to one to run out winners 20-16.
In another fairly close game Keith MacRae scored six shots in winning the first two ends but from there on Ron Hornery and Mike Valentine got back into the match and ran out winners 19-11.
Other results were:
Col Mudie and Steve “Nimo” Mills were too strong for Geoff Freeman and John Carr.
Gary McPhee and Rob Irving had a convincing win against Graham Dixon and Tom Furey.
Wally Grant and George Bradley proved too good for John Dunn and Gordon Dickson.
Col Hayward and Greg Huggins had a good win against Warren Bevan and John Watson.
The prize winners on the day were Ron Hornery and Mike Valentine and the Runners- Up prize went to Col Hayward and Greg Huggins.
Saturday, September 2.
Twenty-two bowlers turned out to play four games of Pairs and one of Triples with three of the matches resulting in very close scores.
In a very close Pairs match, Col Mudie and Jim Blake scored three shots on the first end and Geoff Freeman and Gladrin Sun score four on the second end but from there on it was neck and neck and it wasn’t until the fourteenth end that Col and Jim regained the lead 15-13. Geoff and Gladrin scored seven shots on the next three ends to open up a good lead, 20-15. Not to be outdone, Col and Jim won the last four ends to draw the match 20 all and claimed victory, having won eleven of the twenty-one ends played.
The Triples match was also very close with Ray Jones, Gordon Dickson and John Dunn having the better of the early ends against Arthur Corbett, Bob Freeman and John Taylor. At the start of the thirteenth end, Ray’s team had the lead, 14-6 but Arthur’s team won the next six ends to lead 18-14. The next two ends were won by Ray’s team and with one end to play the scores were locked at 18 all. On a tense last end, Arthur’s team scored the winning shot to take the match, 19-18.
In another close one, George Boatswain and Maureen Baillie won seven of the first eight ends to take a lead of 13-3 against John Ward and Eileen Bradley. John and Eileen fought back strongly but it wasn’t until the twentieth end that they gained the lead, 20 -19 and scored two shots on the last end to win the match 22-19.
In other matches;
Keith MacRae and Ron Hornery had a good win against Joe Crowley and Gary McPhee.
After a close struggle early on, Guy Ellery and Steve Turner got the better of Peter McPhee and Mark Dwyer.
The Winners prize went to Guy Ellery and Steve Turnery and the Runners-up were Keith MacRae and Ron Hornery.
COMING EVENTS.
VISIT BY TRAVELLING BOWLERS FROM CARDIFF NSW.
On the weekend of September 16/17, our Club will be hosting a team of Bowlers from Cardiff in NSW.
On Saturday, Men’s and Women’s events will be held and dress will be club uniform.
Dress on Sunday will be mufti.
A sheet has been provided at the bar and any member wishing to play should get their name in a soon as possible as numbers will be limited.
No social bowls will be played on the Saturday.
Badge Draw.
The Badge Draw was not won last Friday and will be worth $1200 this week and will be drawn on Friday night sometime after 7-30pm, following the meat and voucher raffles. You have to be there to win it so come along and have a great pub style meal and may be go home with a bundle of cash in your pocket.
