Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Brilliant lead bowls by Steve Ryan spearheaded his teams win in a Minor Triples match played last Thursday.
Steve partnered Peter McPhee and John O’Malley against Mike Valentine, Greig Ball and Gary McPhee.
Steve, Peter and John only lost two of the first twelve ends which saw them lead 18-4. After 16 ends they still held a good 21-7 lead. Mike, Greig and Gary rallied and won the next seven ends to trail narrowly 21-18. The last bowl of the penultimate end, delivered by John, saw him sit out an opposition bowl to claim two shots. This meant Gary’s team had to score five shots on the last end to force an extra end. They held three shots with Gary still to deliver his last bowl. He had a difficult shot to try and remove an opposition bowl, which would force an extra end, but unfortunately he was unsuccessful. The final score was a 23-21 win to Steve, Peter and John.
ZONE 4 RUNNER-UP
The team of Dave Johnson, Michael Went, Graham Fliedner and Brett Frame travelled to Coonabarabran to compete in the finals of the Zone Fours. Their first match on Saturday saw them have a very good win over the Paul McKenzie led team from Dubbo Railway who were last years winners. The final score was 25-17.
This put them into the final on Sunday morning against the team from Baradine. The Baradine side played the more consistent bowls and held the advantage throughout the game, winning 20-13. Congratulations to our boys for reaching the final.
ZONE 4 SELECTION
Congratulations to Graham Fliedner, Brett Frame and Michael Went who have been selected to play for Zone 4 at the NSW State Inter Zone Championships at Raymond Terrace on the weekend of 5-6 July. We wish them, and all the Zone 4 team, all the best in their quest to win the State title.
SOCIAL BOWLS
A good field of 26 bowlers competed in social bowls on Thursday.
They played one game of Triples and five games of Pairs.
In the triples match Bob Freeman, Garry Phillips and John Dunn played Rob Clegg, John Watson and Terry Hetherington. This started as a good close match with the score 5-5 after five ends. Bob, Garry and John then won 11 of the next 13 ends to lead 30-9. Terry’s team won the last three ends to narrow the margin to 30-17.
Alan Affleck and John Ward played Ron Hornery and John Hodge. Alan and John held a narrow 10-9 lead after eight ends. They then won the next six ends to grab an 18-9 lead, going on to win the game 28-13.
Mick Blunt and Geoff Freeman played Mike Phillips and Ray Jones. After trailing 0-6, Mike and Ray dominated the next 12 ends to lead 24-9. This dominance was highlight by brilliant bowls by Mike. Mick and Geoff won the next three ends, however the comeback was short lived with Mike and Ray again dominating the last few ends to record a big 29-15 win.
Dean Messiter and Keith MacRae played Keith Alexander and Graham Barby. Keith and Graham won nine of the first eleven ends to lead 18-6. Don and Keith won seven of the last ten ends but were unable to bridge the gap. Keith and Graham ran out 23-14 winners.
Allan Wright and John Carr played Steve Clegg and Arthur Corbett. This was a very close match with a margin of no more than two shots from the tenth end to the conclusion of the match. The score was 20 all after 18 ends. The last three ends were very tight and it was Allan and John who scored two shots on the last end to snatch victory 23-22.
The last game saw Les Kent and John Corcoran play Brett Cusack and Warren Bevan. John and Les led 11-4 after eight ends. Brett and Warren fought their way back into the game and grabbed the lead 17-16 after 18 ends. The next two ends saw each team score a four shot end which left Brett and Warren leading 21-20. Les and John scored one shot on the last end to draw a very entertaining game. Les and John won the ends 11-10.
The rain prevented any bowls on Saturday. This means the Super Saturday event, sponsored by Greig Ball and Tom Casey, has been transferred to this coming Saturday, 5th July.
Super Saturday sees the prize money tripled. All bowlers are invited to this event.
