CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
During last week Dean Searl and Warren Bevan advanced to the next round of the Major Pairs event defeating Graham Barby and Joe Davis. The team of Brett “Baldy” Frame and Paul Henry also had a win in the Major Pairs over Col Mudie and John Ward.
In a Major Singles match “Baldy” Frame had a win against Warren Bevan to go into the next round.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday, February 25.
With the temperature in the low forties only six bowlers braved the conditions to play a Triples match. Col Hayward , John Hodge and Bob Freeman had the better of the early ends to take a 7 – 0 lead over Col Mudie, John Taylor and Les Kent after three ends. Col Mudie’s team came back to 13 – 8 after nine ends. It was Col Hayward’s team who then came back to lead 18 -15 starting the sixteenth end. At the start of the final end team Hayward’s lead had been reduced to one shot and Col Mudie’s team scored two shots on the final end to win the match 23-22.
Saturday, February 27.
In addition to the Major Singles match, four games of Pairs were played with some interesting results.
The team of Steve “Nimo” Mills and Bob Freeman got away to a good start and lead Bernie Mitchell and Gordon Dickson 8 – 0 after five ends. Bernie and Gordon gradually got back into the games and by the thirteenth end had cut the lead to a single shot (13 – 12). The scores remained fairly even and with one end to play Nimo and Bob lead 20 -18. One the last end Bernie and Gordon scored the two shots needed to tie the score at 20 all. Nimo and Bob claimed the match on a count back having won the ends 11 – 10. In another close game Mike Valentine and Les Kent started strongly to win five of the first seven ends and lead Dave Johnson and John Watson 10 – 2 going into the eighth end. Dave and John scored 6 shots on the eighth end but Mike and Les replied by scoring 5 on the ninth end and a single on the tenth to restore their eight shot lead (16 – 8). In spite of winning seven of the remaining eleven ends Dave and John could not match Mike and Les who ran out winners 21 – 17.
Other winners were John Ward and Col Woods over Liz Byrne and Bill Skinner and Joe Davies and Rob Irving over Keith MacRea and Graham Barby.
Prize winners on the day were Ray Jones (who was Marker for the Major singles match) and Baldy Frame. The runners up were Rob Irving and Joe Davies.
Sunday, February 28.
Three games of Pairs were played but on a “fun” evening the main attraction was the battle of the Boys versus the Girls which turned out to be a very close match. Tom Furey and Keith MacRae got the Boys away to a great start and lead 3 -1 after three ends over Liz Byrne and Brenda Davies. The girls fought back to win the next 3 ends to lead 8 – 3. It was the Boys turn to star next and win four of the next 5 ends and level the scores at 9 all starting the twelfth end. The Girls lost that end by one shot but scored two on the next to lead 11 – 10 going into the final end. The Boys scored two shots on that end to take the match 12 – 11. Some might say that proves Boys are better drivers than Girls, on the bowling green as well as on the road, but I think that question is still open to a lot of debate.
In the other matches Guy Ellery and Graeme Phillips had a win over Jim Blake and Geoff Leonard and Rob Irving and Gladrin Sun were too strong for George Bradley and Bob Freeman.
Prizes went to Brenda Davies and George Bradley.
TWILIGHT BOWLS.
THURSDAY, February 25.
A full complement of sixteen teams played eight games of Triples and some very close matches were played. Two of the matches ended in draws and two ended with one shot victories.
The Battlers and the High Rollers were 3 all after five ends before the High Rollers scored five shots on the sixth end. The final ends went to the Battlers 6 – 1 to tie the scores at 9 all, with the Battlers claiming the match, having won most of the ends.
The other drawn match between Casey Surveying and Loopy Loppers No. 1, which also ended 9 all, was won by Loopy Loppers on the toss of a coin even though Casey Surveying had won seven of the twelve ends played.
The Super B’s lost the first three ends to trail The Bushies 0 – 7, but won seven of the last nine ends to run out winners 10 – 9.
The other close match saw one of our newer teams, 1300 Bugmen, score a 14 – 13 win over Bowlsbros.
The teams of We Wreck ‘M N’ We Fix ‘M, Loopy Loppers No. 2, Central West Glass and Central West Marine also had wins on the night.
The Prize for the lucky winners went to The Battlers and the lucky loser’s prize went to Three Amigos.
PENNANTS PRACTICE GAME.
On Friday, February 26 the Parkes Railway/Diggers club visited our club for a practice match with our Pennant players.
It was a great evening and, in spite of the friendly nature of the match, some very competitive bowls were played.
Each club provided six teams of four players, each match was over eighteen ends. Parkes Bowling and Sports Club won five of the six matches and won the overall score 122 shots to 86.
A return match will be played next Friday, March 4 at the Railway club.
