Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
PRESENTATION DAY
Col Hayward was announced as the PBSC Bowler of the Year at the annual Presentation Day on Saturday.
Col had an outstanding year of bowls. Here is a list of his achievements:
Club Level – Winner of the Major Pairs, Major Triples, Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours. Runner-up in the Handicap Singles and Handicap Pairs.
District Level – Winner of the Open Fours, Senior Singles and Senior Pairs.
Zone Level – Winner of the Senior Singles and Senior Pairs.
State Level – Runner-up in the Senior Singles.
In past years Col has been runner-up in the Champion of Champions State Singles, also teamed with Arthur Corbett and Trevor Cole in State Triples finals on a number of occasions. Col’s attitude to the game and his ability to read and convert a head has seen him continue to be one of the top bowlers in country NSW.
Bob Freeman was the recipient of the Eddie and Michelle McPhee Sponsored, Personel High Achievment Award. Eddie’s brother, Peter, spoke of Bob’s love of the game of bowls and also the commitment of Bob’s wife, Barrie, in supporting Bob’s bowling endeavours.
In some way this award belongs to all fellow bowlers who have encouraged and helped Bob both on and off the green.
Peter White, Central West District President, was also on hand to present District Awards to various members. In total some 40 individual bowlers received Club, District or Zone awards.
The club would like to thank all those who sponsored awards.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
16 bowlers turned out and played four games of Pairs.
Peter ten Cate and Dave Johnson led all the way in recording a good 22-10 win against Chris Dunn and Craig Henry.
Mick Blunt and Steve Turner played Jamie Brooks and Greg Fisher. After holding a one shot lead, 9-8 after eight ends, Mick and Steve powered home to win 21-10.
Rob Irving and Ted Wright scored five shots on the last end to defeat Tom Furey and Greg Townsend 16-14.
In a very tight match Bob Freeman and Alan Affleck had a 12 all draw with Don Littlewood and Keith Hutchison. Bob and Alan won the ends 8-6.
Voucher winners were Keith Hutchison, Don Littlewood, Alan Affleck, Ted Wright and Craig Henry.
The jackpot was not won and now stands at $540. Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
SOCIAL
Thursday saw 30 bowlers play one game of Triples and six games of Pairs.
In the triples match Tom Cole, Mike Valentine and John Carr led all the way in their 21-13 win over Noel Nicholson, Norm Keane and John Hodge.
Alan Affleck and Keith MacRae were too strong for Jim Jennings and Joe Crowley, winning 22-10.
Rob Irving and Col Hayward had a big 33-14 win over Bob Freeman and Warren Bevan.
After the scores were locked at 14-14 after 14 ends, Bill Skinner and Gary McPhee finished strongly to record a 27-21 win over Tony Byrne and Greig Ball.
Bernie Mitchell and John Corcoran played Bert Eykenboom and Wally Austin. Bernie and John got away to a good lead of 16-8 after 11 ends and went on to win 25-17.
Nev Whitfield and John Ward led all the way in defeating John Dunn and Gordon Dickson 29-19.
John Keogh and Kevin Hynds played Allan Wright and Bruce Deland. John and Kevin led 21-10 after 15 ends and went on to win 32-19.
10 lucky bowlers won Christmas hams and cakes.
On Saturday 42 bowlers played six games of Triples.
Wes Westcott, Mike Valentine and Pat Cooney led all the way in a narrow 18-15 win over Col Woods, Rhona Went and Arthur Corbett.
Ron Fisher, Kevin Hynds and John Ward played Alan Affleck, Liz Byrne and Geoff Freeman. Alan, Liz and Geoff led 19-12 after 16 ends. Ron, Kevin and John then won the last five ends to claim victory 21-19.
Ron Murray, Dave Johnson and Wally Austin held a big 18-3 lead after 14 ends against Allan Wright, Gwenda Carty and John O’Malley. Allan, Gwenda and John won six of the last seven ends but were unable to bridge the gap. Ron, Dave and Wally hung on to win 19-15.
Chris Dunn, Gary McPhee and Tom Casey had a good 26-14 win over Bernie Mitchell, Peter McPhee and John Corcoran.
Max Tomkins, Joe Crowley and John Carr played Ray Jones, Steve Mills and Col Hayward. Max, Joe and John led 16-7 after 18 ends and held on to win 16-13.
Gordon Dickson, John Hodge and Peter White played Tom Furey, Steve Ryan and Robert Corbett. After trailing 5-14, Tom, Steve and Robert stormed home to win 26-19.
Norm Keane, Craig Henry and Vic Glasheen played Bob Freeman, Ron Hornery and Terry Hetherington. This was a very close and low scoring match. The scores were locked 10-10 after 18 ends and then Norm, Craig and Vic won the last three ends to run out winners 17-10.
A draw out of the hat saw ten lucky bowlers win Christmas hams and cakes.
OLD BOWLS DAY
Sunday saw 30 bowlers play in the Liz Byrne and Rhona Went sponsored Old Bowls Day. All bowlers enjoyed the challenge and this event will definitely be on again next year. Robyn Morgan and Garry Went came from behind to defeat Gwenda Carty and Wally Austin 21-16. Rose Mitchell and John Hodge trailed 7-14 after 14 ends against Rhonda Mason and Dave Johnson. They then won the last seven ends to run out winners 20-14. Tony Byrne, Rhona Went and Col Hayward scored six shots in the last two ends to defeat Colin Woods, Liz Byrne and Terry Hetherington 22-15.
Brenda Davies and John Corcoran led all the way in defeating Cherie Frame and Alan Affleck 18-12. Bernie Mitchell and Mike Valentine had a big 27-11 win over Barrie Freeman and Kevin Hynds. Bill Skinner and Robert Corbett finished strongly to defeat Bob Freeman and Pat Cooney 28-15. John Dunn and Geoff Freeman hung on to win a low scoring game against Chris Dunn and Keith MacRae 15-12.
Major prize winners were Bill Skinner and Robert Corbett and the lucky loser’s prize went to Cherie Frame and Alan Affleck.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
Thursday night saw 60 bowlers play in the final competition round of Round 1 twilight bowls. Following play awards were given for Round 1. Best performed teams were Bowls Bros and Casey Surveying. Most consistent team went to Rok-FM and the Encouragement Award was won by Young Guns.
Round 2 will commence on Thursday 16th January with a free night.
TRUNDLE SCHOOL VISIT
A group of Trundle school students participated in a bowls seminar last Friday. The general feeling of the group was one of enjoyment and they are keen to come back again next year.
GENERAL
The clubs Christmas raffle, with a value of approximately $1000, will be drawn on Friday night. Tickets available on Friday night as well as at the main bar anytime during the week.
The bowls committee has decided to revert back to the old daylight saving starting times. This means that names are to be in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.
Saturday social bowls is now a mixed event.
The Parkes Bowling & Sports Club and the Men’s Bowls Committees would like to wish all members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
