Strong Field for Classic Pairs
Published by Johnny Perella in Bowls Notes • 5/18/2011 8:35:29 AM
The annual Parkes Telescope Tyres, G Hunter &Co, Griffins Leading Edge and Dwyers Fresh Classic pair’s tournament starts today and has attracted some very strong pairs from all over the area. Among the best chances from the visitors are Mario Ruggiero and George Ford Orange, Frank Powter and Lindsey Adamson from Ettalong. Also Alan Messiter and Stan Lauritzen of Cowra will be strong as will Keith Hardwick and Don Sullivan from Narromine. Of the locals Baldy and Ricky Frame along with Colin Hayward and Mark Dwyer appear to be our best chances of being in the running for some of the $3000 prize money on offer.

Thursday bowls.
The weather turned cold and the bowlers stayed indoors with only twelve brave souls turning out for social mufti. The game to stand out took a twilight finish to get a result, and in the gathering dusk Andrew Trotman and Tony Byrne won a gruelling encounter against Keith Mac Rae and Garry McPhee 18-15. Also in a good match Dave Button and Noel Nicholson combined well to defeat John Corcoran and Mike Valentine 14-10. Geoff Freeman and John Dunn were on their game getting the better of John Ward and Mick Holland 22-13. Not sure whether there will be social bowls this week due to the Classic pairs tournament, but if there are a couple of spare rinks it will go ahead, might be an idea to check with the club first.

Saturday Bowls.
The annual Parkes Cellars day was again a great success, despite the cold conditions 48 players turned out to enjoy the day. After eighteen ends of triples winners were Ray Jones, Chris McNaughton and Scrubber Evans, the runner ups were Pat Cooney, Chris Dunn and Marie Grant.

There were also a couple of matches played, one in major pairs and one minor singles.
In the major pairs Baldy Frame and Paul Henry were far too strong for Ben Townsend and Mick Craft allowing them only five singles in an impressive 27-5 victory. In the minor singles Tom Casey continues to impress with a 31-12 demolition of Mike Parkes.

This week there will be club championship matches in Major singles and minor pairs plus social bowls please check the board to see if you are playing.

Sunday Bowls.
The top pennant sides had little joy over the weekend, with the No1 and No4 sides suffering crushing losses at home. The No1 side bowed out of contention following a two rinks to one loss at the hands of Dubbo Railway 51-67. Only Baldy Frame’s side showed any form they won their rink handsomely 26-13. The side will be looking to finish the season on a high note with a win against front runners Nyngan at Parkes this Sunday.

The No4 boys also played Dubbo Railway and suffered a similar fate to the top side, well beaten two rinks to one 36-58 and their season appears to be over. John Corcoran led his side in magnificent fashion and was the only shining light for Parkes winning a tough encounter 13-12.

The picture was much brighter for our No.6 and No.7 sides, both having great away wins. The No6 boys continue to impress defeating Forbes two rinks to one 70 – 54. Terry Hetherington and his side were the front runners winning 29-14 and Bruce Orr’s team got home 22-20 in a cliff hanger, Ted Wright’s side just went down 19-20.
In this week’s game against the other Forbes side we could wrap up the district flag with another solid performance. The No.7 team won two rinks to one in their 75-55 win against Parkes Railway, leading the day was Dave Johnson and his boys with a fine 27-9 win and also winning well was Greg Fisher’s side they ran out 30-20 victors. The side is coming home at a great rate and after their 5- 1 win over Railway they have kept their chances of winning the flag alive. Their last round match against Peak Hill this weekend is vital to their chances and they must win well to get through.

Coming Events.
This Sunday the No.1 pennant side will be at home to Nyngan, the game will start at 11am and the boys will be keen to finish with a win. The No.6 side travel to Forbes and the No7 side will be away also travelling to Peak Hill.
