CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The semi-finals of the Major Pairs were played last weekend.
On Saturday four of the clubs top bowlers, Graham Barby, John Davies, Arthur Corbett and Col Hayward faced off in the first semi-final. Arthur and Col won the first two ends and led 4-0. Graham and John picked up six shots on the third end and won eight of the next ten ends to establish a very handy 19-6 lead. Arthur and Col staged a mini comeback to narrow the margin to five shots with four ends to play. Graham and John dominated the next three ends and extended their lead to 26-15 to claim the match with one end remaining. Graham and John both played wonderful draw bowls throughout the match and based on that display will be very hard to beat in the final.
The second semi-final on Sunday saw Bruce Orr and Steve Ryan play Col Mudie and John O’Malley.
The first half of the match was very tight with the score tied three times in the first 11 ends. With the score 10all, Bruce and Steve won the next four ends to lead 17-10. They led 19-13 after 18 ends before Col and John scored five shots to trail by only one shot, 19-18 with two ends to play. Bruce and Steve held firm, scoring two shots on each of the last two ends to take the match 23-18. They will now meet Graham Barby and John Davies in the final.
CLASSIC PAIRS CARNIVAL
A good field of 26 teams from across the state competed in the carnival. This years event was one of the most closely contested carnivals held at the club.
The event consisted of five games of 15 ends with no team being able to win all their matches. After three rounds only five teams remained undefeated with four of those teams opposed to each other in the fourth round. At the completion of the fourth round two teams remained undefeated. They were Paul Hollingsworth and Chris Biffin from Gulgong and our local team of Mike Valentine and Peter McPhee. Unfortunately both teams lost their last game which cost them the chance of being the overall winner. Mike and Peter lost by a considerable margin which resulted in them missing a top five position.
At the completion of the final round eight teams had recorded four wins which meant margins would decide the winning positions. Final results were:
1st – Bob Wilson and Garry King (Wellington) 4 wins + 43
2nd – David Dalton (Dubbo) and Keith MacRae 4 wins + 36
3rd – Mark Dwyer and Col Hayward 4 wins + 27
4th – Max Tomkins and John Corcoran 4 wins + 25
5th – Paul Hollingsworth and Chris Biffin (Gulgong) 4 wins + 18
Mystery Prize winners were Ray Walters and Blake Bradke (Grenfell) and Graham Barby and Arthur Corbett.
SOCIAL
With the large number of our bowlers participating in the Classic Pairs Carnival only 10 bowlers played one game of Pairs and one game of Triples on Thursday afternoon.
In the Triples game Les Kent, Tom Cole and Warren Bevan only lost two ends in recording a big 28-3 win over Bob Freeman, Bill Skinner and Bruce Deland.
In the Pairs game Ian Mill and Mick Blunt played John Watson and Rob Irving. John and Rob got out to a handy 16-6 lead after 11 ends. Ian and Mick then won four of the next five ends to trail narrowly 15-17. John and Rob finished the stronger, winning three of the last four ends to win 23-17.
Prize winners were Ian Mill, Les Kent and Warren Bevan.
RUGBY LEAGUE DAY
Over 70 bowlers participated in the fund raising event on Saturday afternoon. League players and supporters teamed with club bowlers to play two games of ten end Triples. The day discovered some very talented bowlers and others who are more suited to rugby league.
At the end of the day prize winners were drawn out with well over half of the participants receiving prizes.
This event was a very successful day for both clubs.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
12 bowlers played three games of Pairs on Sunday.
Mal Porter and Martin Tighe played Rob Irving and Chris Dunn. Mal and Martin scored six shots on the tenth end to hold a handy lead of 16-5. Rob and Chris fought back, however a six shot last end by Mal and Martin saw them win 22-10.
Keith Hutchison and Terry Hetherington played Mick Horan and John Dunn. This was a very close game with the score 12all after 11 ends. Keith and Terry won the next two ends to lead 14-12 and then Mick and John scored two shots to level the score at 14all. Keith and Terry scored one shot on the last end to win narrowly 15-14.
Mick Blunt and Tony Bright only lost two ends in their 17-4 win over Robert Kelly and Mick Craft.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000. The range of numbers for the jackpot margin is being reduced by two each week until the jackpot is won.
Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
