CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
During the last week the first rounds of the Club Handicap Championships got underway.
In a Handicap Singles match John Ward and Rob Irving played off the same handicap and John lead 5-1 after three ends. By the end of the sixth end Rob had taken the lead the lead, 6-5 and from there on was never headed, winning 31-21 after thirty ends.
On Thursday, two Handicap Pairs matches were played.
Col Hayward and Bob Freeman had a four shot handicap advantage over Ron Hornery and John Ward but after six ends Ron and John had drawn level at 8 all. After fifteen ends Ron and John had taken the lead, 16-14 but Col and Bob fought back, winning five of the last six ends to advance to the next round with a 21-18 win.
In the other pairs match Bernie Mitchell and George Boatswain had a six shot Handicap advantage over Rob Irving and Ray Jones and it wasn’t until the nineteenth end that Rob and Ray wiped off the advantage, when the scores were 19 all, but could not sustain the effort and Bernie and George won the last two ends to run out winners, 23-19.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, October 5.
Eighteen players turned out for three games of Pairs and one Triples.
The Triples match turned out to be the closest of the day with Geoff Freeman, John Taylor and John Dunn taking on John Davies, John Watson and George Bradley. Geoff’s team had the best of the early ends but John’s team lead 4-2 after the fourth end. In spite of a strong come-back by Geoff’s team it wasn’t until the nineteenth end that they were able to take the lead 20-18. The second last end went to John’s team but the last end was won by Geoff’s team and they ran out winners 22-20.
In a close Pairs match, Ted Wright and Gladrin Sun scored three shots on the first end against Col Mudie and Jim Blake. The next two ends were won by Col and Jim and it wasn’t until the sixth end that Ted and Gladrin regained the lead 9-5. From there on Ted and Gladrin maintained their lead and ran out winners 21-18.
It was good to welcome back Rob Tinker, who paired with Graham Dixon for a hard fought win against Guy Ellery and Col Woods, 25-17.
In the other Pairs match, Gary McPhee and Mike Valentine had a convincing win against Graham Barby and Gordon Dickson.
The Winners on the day were George Boatswain and Bernie Mitchell and The Runners-up prize went to the winning Triples team of Geoff Freeman, John Taylor and John Dunn.
CLASSIC TRIPLES TOURNAMENT.
On the weekend our club members were joined by Bowlers from Belrose, Camden, Forbes, Bathurst, Condobolin and Parkes Railway Club when 42 players contested the 3 Bowls Classic Triples Tournament. Total prize money on offer was $ 2,670 thanks to our generous sponsors, Forbes Central Butchery, Terry Bros Carpet Court and Parkes Mensland.
Each team played three games of fifteen ends on Saturday and two on Sunday in mixed weather conditions. Saturday was sunshine all day and on Sunday the rain took over but all five games were completed.
Winners of the event, and the only team to win all five games were our local members, Gwenda Carty Col Hayward and Liz Byrne.
2nd place winners were also a local team, John Taylor, Ron Hornery and Tom Furey.
3rd place went to The Forbes team of Lyall Strudwick, Graham West and Geoff Williams.
4th place went to the team from Belrose, Chris Webber, Richard Wise and John Venteman.
5th place winners were the team from Parkes Railway Club, Marty Fitzpatrick, Ray Griffith and Steve Frame.
The Club would like to thank everyone who contributed to making it a great, if somewhat wet weekend, of Bowls, including our major sponsors, Graham Barby for all the work he put in organising the event, Tom Furey and Gladrin Sun for providing excellent meals on Saturday and Sunday, our team of volunteers who prepare the greens and the club grounds and all the other members and staff who helped out over the weekend and of course all those who entered the event including our visitors – hope to see you all again next year.
Twilight Bowls.
Just a reminder that this competition will re-start next Thursday night, October 12, be there by 6.30 for a 7.00pm start.
We look forward to welcoming back all the teams that played last year and would also like to see some new players this year.
It’s a great, relaxed way to get into our sport so, if you have never played before or want to return to bowls, come along on the night to register. We are looking for teams of three or come along on your own and we will try to team you up with a couple of other players
All equipment is proved so all you need are some flat soled shoes – or play barefoot if you prefer.
Cost is $10 per week but the first night is free and the light supper after the game will be roast lamb, cooked on a spit by Tom Furey and his helpers and our bar staff will gladly serve you a nice cool drink, alcoholic or otherwise.
Look forward to seeing you on the night.
Sunday Social Bowls.
As from next Sunday, October 14, the Club will be running mixed social bowls.
