Published by Johnny Perella in Bowls Notes • 6/14/2011 6:55:55 PM
The weather was bitterly cold and conditions weren’t good, just six brave souls turned out for social mufti and there was one match played. The match was the first semi- final of the major singles and the fans were treated to a great contest with two former champs Baldy Frame and Colin Hayward going head to head. The game see sawed as both players opened up handy leads only to see their opponent come back and not only level up but take the lead again. Colin came from 21-26 down to take what looked like a winning 28-26 lead but Baldy rallied and picked up a three and a two to run out a fine 31-28 winner.

In the social game Mike Parkes, Wally Austin and Mike Valentine won a triples encounter against Rob Tinker, Greig Ball and Greg Davies 26-14.

The weather changed for the better and the bowlers turned out in force despite many being away for the long weekend. There was one major pair’s quarter final and eight social games played. In the pairs match after a real battle early with both sides playing some fine bowls the scores were all locked up on 11all after thirteen ends. But Robert Corbett and Noel Nicholson gradually pulled away over the closing ends to reach the semi- finals with a convincing 23-14 win over Colin Mudie and John Corcoran.

Best of the social games was a very narrow 21-19 win for Wally Austin and Mike Parkes over Tony Bright and Ron Murray. Three behind with two ends to play Wally and Mike lifted their rating and came home like a train to pick up five shots and a narrow two shot victory. In other games Rhona Went, Tom Hamilton and John Edwards def Mike Valentine, Steve Turner and Ellie Hetherington 26-21. Arthur Corbett and Greig Ball won 28-15 against John Davies and Joe Crowley and Ted Wright and Garry McPhee def Rob Tinker and Ryan McLuckie 26-14. Terry Hetherington and liz Byrne won 27-12 against John Hodge and Jim Jennings, while on the next rink Ray Jones and Chris Dunn were too strong for Geoff Freeman and Merv Hennock 27-11. And in a complete mismatch Ken Walsh and Tony Byrne as would be expected won 36-7 against Greg Townsend and June Burgess.

This week scheduled in minor pairs is (Ben and Paul Townsend v Mike Parkes and Bernie Mitchell) and a minor singles match involving (Paul Henry v Peter McPhee) also one major singles match featuring (John Corcoran v Josh Mills). There will be normal social bowls, all of which will be in the safe hands of Graham Barby and Bruce Orr.
