Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
PENNANTS.
The second round of the Pennants were played on Sunday, March 12 and on the score sheets our three grades did not fair very well in spite if some great bowls being played. The Grade 2 side travelled to Dubbo City’s home and in a very close match were beaten 54-52.
Col Hayward’s team had a good win in their match, winning by eight shots and Garry Carberry’s team went down narrowly by one shot and John Davies team went down by nine shots giving Dubbo City a win of 9 points to 1.
Playing at home, our Grade 5 side also lost 9 points to one against Parkes Railway/Diggers Club. Our winning team, Skipped by Keith MacRae, won 21-18. Col Mudie’s team were narrowly beaten 16-19 while Arthur Corbett’s team were no match for their opponents, going down 36-10.
The Grade 7 side travelled to Condobolin and were also beaten 9 points to 1.
George Boatswain’s team had a great win, 25-14 while Steve Mills’ team went down by a single shot, 18-19.
Joe Crowley’s team could not match their opponents going down 33-9.
Not too good on the score card but it was a great day of bowls and congratulations to all involved.
Here’s hoping for better luck for next weekend when the 2’s are home to West Dubbo, the 5’s travel to Caragabal and the 7’s are away at Peak Hill.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
In a very close Major Singles match, Matt Parker started well against Graham Barby to lead 6-1 after three ends. Graham fought back and after seven ends the scores were level 6 all. Over the next eight ends Matt again played well to build a lead of 18-9 but Graham again got back into the match and after nineteen ends Matt lead by a single shot – 18-17. Though he played some great bowls Graham could not match Matt and on the thirty-first end Matt scored the single shot he needed to win the match 31-25.
On Saturday, in a Major Singles match, Col Mudie had a win over Gary McPhee 31-22 and , in a Major Pairs match Col Hayward and Arthur Corbett played a very great struggle against Tom Furey and Dave Johnson.
Col and Arthur lead for most of the games and it wasn’t until the eighteenth end that Tom and Dave scored four shots to lead 18-17. On the next two ends each team scored a single shot and going into the last end Tom and Dave lead 19-18. In an exciting finish to the match, Col and Arthur held two shots that would give them victory but Tom played a great shot to move the jack and give him the shot. With his last bowl Col tried to remove Tom’s bowl to give him and Arthur the two shots they needed to win but just failed to do so and Tom and Dave moved into the Semi-Finals with a very close 20-18 win.

John Dunn and Les Kent had a convincing win against Guy Ellery and Bill Skinner.
I’m afraid my notes don’t include mention of the prize winners on the day, and I apologise for this oversight, but I’m sure the winners know who they were and have already spent the prize money.
