Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
Club Championships.
A number of Championship matches were played during the week.
The first semi-final of the Major singles, between John Hodge and Wilbur Harris was played on Saturday, June 25.
Wilbur got off to a great start and lead 4- 0 after three ends. Playing consistent bowls John gradually got the better of Wilbur and after fifteen ends lead 17 – 9. Wilbur fought back and after thirty-one ends John’s lead had been cut to two shots (25 – 23). John then went on to win the next three ends to score the six shots he needed to claim the match, 31 – 23, and advance to the Final.
On Sunday, June 26 Graham “Flip” Fliedner and Dave Johnson played a Major Pairs match against Warren Bevan and Dean Searl. Graham and Dave proved too strong for Warren and Dean and advanced to the next round.
Two Minor Singles matches were played and Les Kent and Gary McPhee had convincing wins against George Bradley and Rob Irving.
Social Bowls.
Thursday, June 23.
In bitterly cold weather and intermittent rain, three games of Pairs and one of Triples were played, although all were cut short due to the conditions.
The closest game was the one between Col Mudie, John Watson and Bob Freeman and the team of Keith MacRae Gordon Dickson and Greg Huggins. The scores were close throughout the game and after sixteen ends rain stopped play with Col’s team claiming victory 16 -15.
Winning teams in the other Pairs matches were John Hodge/Joe Crowley (who only lasted fourteen ends), John Ward/Ray Jones and Geoff Freeman/Wally Grant.
The Prize on the day went to Les Kent and Rob Irving, who was Marker for the Minor Singles game.
Saturday, June 25.
The weather had improved a little by Saturday, probably nearly as cold as Thursday but no rain, and the four games of Pairs that were played all got through the twenty-one ends.
Rob Irving and Greg Huggins had the better of the early ends against John Ward and Bob Freeman and after eight ends they lead 11 – 4. The next four ends were won by John and Bob and after the twelfth end the lead had been cut to 11 – 10. Both teams won four of the last eight ends but Rob and Greg outscored John and Bob 10 – 5 to run out winners 21 – 15.
Convincing winners of the other games were the teams of Graham Dixon/Col Woods, Tom Furey/Dave Johnson and John Davies/ Mark Dwyer.
