Gold Team Off To A Good Start

Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
STATE CLUB CHALLENGE
The club’s Gold team played the first round of the State Challenge on Saturday against a strong Dubbo Railway team.
The local boys come away with a hard fought 3-0 victory.
In the singles match, of first to 31, Brett Frame was up against Brian Fernando. In a closely fought match the lead changed several times before Brett got a mini break to lead 28-23. Brian fought back and narrowed the lead to one shot to trail 28-27. Brett then scored three shots on the next end to win the match 31-27.
In the pairs match of 15 ends, Tom Casey and Col Hayward played Mick Rea and Jay Marskel. In another closely fought match the lead changed three times in the first six ends before Tom and Col got out to lead 9-4 after 9 ends and 10-7 after 12 ends. The Dubbo boys then won the next two ends to level the score 10all leaving the 15th end to decide the match. With Dubbo holding match, Col drove and managed to kill the end resulting in a replay of the 15th end. Tom and Col then scored one shot to win the match 11-10.
In the fours match of 18 ends, Geoff Freeman, Mark Dwyer, John Davies and Graham Fliedner played John Adams, John Schreiber , Tim Wilkinson and Paul McKenzie. The Parkes side got away to a handy lead of 12-2 after 6 ends and thanks to some great bowls from skip Graham extended the lead to 21-9 after 14 ends. The Dubbo side rallied to win the last four ends but the deficit was too great, with Graham’s side running out comfortable winners 21-15. Graham was the stand out player of the match.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
More Handicap Pairs matches were played over the last week.
On Tuesday Gary McPhee and Geoff Freeman played Col Woods and Graham Barby. The first half of the match was very close with the lead changing five times in the first 10 ends and the scores level at 13all after 11 ends. Thanks to some great bowls from Gary, he and Geoff won eight of the last ten ends to win comfortably 29-17.
Thursday saw Bill Skinner and Joe Crowley play Noel Nicholson and John Ward. After receiving an eight shot start, Bill and Joe dominated the match to lead 25-10 after 17 ends. Noel and John then scored 12 shots in the next three ends to trail 22-25. Bill and Joe steadied to score one shot on the last end and run out winners 26-22.
On Saturday Ron Murray and Terry Hetherington played Kevin Hynds and John Carr. After receiving a four shot start Ron and Terry played some good bowls to lead 22-3 after nine ends. Kevin and John won the next four ends to narrow the score to 22-14. Ron and Terry maintained the lead over the concluding ends and ran out winners 30-21.
Two matches were played on Sunday.
Bernie Mitchell and George Boatswain received eight shots start from Greig Ball and Tom Casey. Greig and Tom caught up to Bernie and George after 10 ends with the score 13all. They then won six of the next nine ends to run out winners 26-18.
Norm Keane and Mike Valentine played Sheldon Orr (sub) and Arthur Corbett. After giving a two shot handicap start to the opposition, Sheldon and Arthur won the first four ends to lead 6-2. Norm and Mike then won the next seven ends to lead 15-6. Despite winning seven of the next nine ends Sheldon and Arthur were still trailing 18-15. Two very accurate lead bowls by Norm on the last end set up a winning head for Norm and Mike. Sheldon and Arthur tried to alter the head but were unsuccessful. Norm and Mike secured three shots to win the match 21-15.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
10 bowlers turned out to try to win the $1000 jackpot.
In the pairs match Guy Ellery and Chris Dunn played Keith Hutchison and Kevin Hynds. Leading narrowly 13-11 after 11 ends, Guy and Chris then won four of the last five ends to win 18-13.
The triples match saw Bob Freeman, Steve Mills and Greg Townsend play Tom Cole, Peter tenCate and Ted Wright.
After Bob sorted out who his team members were, he combined well with Peter and Greg to win comfortably 19-7.
Prize winners were Bob Freeman, Steve Mills and Greg Townsend.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000.
Come along next Sunday for a game, a sausage sizzle, and to be in the running for the $1000 jackpot.
SOCIAL
22 bowlers turned out on Thursday playing four games of Pairs and one game of Triples.
Bruce Deland and John Carr played Norm Keane and Col Hayward. The scores were 12all after 14 ends before Norm and Col hit top gear and won five of the last seven ends and ran out winners 24-15.
Mike Valentine and Dave Johnson led all the way in defeating Bernie Mitchell and Gary McPhee 22-12.
After being down 11-1, Ray Jones and John Hodge dominated the remainder of the match against Alan Affleck and Col Mudie to run out winners 21-15.
Kevin Robertson and Warren Bevan played Ron Hornery and Greig Ball. With the score 15all after 19 ends, Ron and Greig scored one shot on each of the last two ends to win the match 17-15.
In the triples match Bob Freeman, Allan Wright and Brett Frame played Tom Cole, Bob Byrne (a visitor from Yeppoon) and Geoff Freeman. In a match dominated by our visitor, Bob Byrne, the team of Tom, Bob and Geoff held a big lead of 23-6 after 16 ends. Bob, Alan and Brett score eight shots in the last five ends to make the final result a win to Tom, Bob and Geoff 23-14.
Thursday’s major prize winners were Bill Skinner and Joe Crowley and the minor winners were Ray Jones and John Hodge.
Owing to players being involved in the Club Challenge and also the Peak Hill President’s Day only 12 bowlers played social bowls on Saturday.
Col Woods and Gordon Dickson played Tom Cole and Steve Mills. With the scores level at 12all after 16 ends, Col and Gordon took the lead with a four shot end and held on to win 18-15.
Noel Nicholson and Ron Hornery played Max Tomkins and Ted Wright. This was another close tussle with the scores level 14all after 17 ends. Noel and Ron then won the remaining ends to win 22-14.
Ray Jones and Greig Ball were always in charge of their match against Bill Wyatt and Col Mudie. At one stage they led 21-4 and ran out winners 23-14.
Saturday prize winners were Ron Murray and Terry Hetherington.

The AGM of the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club Limited was held last week. The officials for the next 12 months are:

Men’s Classic Triples Carnival is on 12th and 13th October with nominations closing on 9th October, and a reminder that Twilight Bowls will commence on Thursday 10th October with nominations closing 8th October.
