Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
HANDICAP PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
Wilbur Harris and John Corcoran are the Handicap Pairs champions for 2014 following their win over Bruce Deland and Dean Searl on Saturday. Bruce and Dean received a one shot start and got out to an early 8-3 lead. Wilbur and John had the better of the next six ends to level the score at 10-10 after 10 ends. In a very dour tussle the next five ends were all one shot scoring ends with Bruce and Dean winning four of them to lead 14-11. Wilbur and John scored three shots on the next two ends to make the score 14 all after 17 ends and it looked like the match was going to go down to the wire. They then took control of the match, scoring three shots, six shots and one shot on the next three ends to draw away for a good 24-15 win. The match was certainly much closer than the final score indicated and congratulations to both teams for a great match as a finale to the closest and most hard fought Handicap Pairs championship played at the club.
THURSDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
Played in magnificent conditions 34 bowlers contested seven games of pairs and one game of triples.
In the triples game Nev Whitfield, Dave Littlewood and Ted Wright played Don Littlewood, Colin Woods and Wally Austin. Nev, Dave and Ted had the better start and led 12-8 after 10 ends. Don, Colin and Wally then won six of the next seven ends to lead 20-16 and go on to win the game 24-19.
Peter Creith and John Corcoran played Brendon Middendorf and Baldy Frame. Peter and John, aided by seven shots on the first end, led 13-3 early and still held a 19-9 lead after 13 ends. Brendon and Baldy then played some great bowls in winning the next six ends and grabbed a 22-19 lead and held on to win 22-21. This was a payback win for Brendon and Baldy as Peter and John had defeated them in their previous encounter.
Terry Hetherington and Keith MacRae led all the way in their 25-20 win over John Watson and Joe Crowley.
Matthew Parker and Greig Ball completely dominated their game against Mick Blunt and Mike Valentine, winning 31-11.
Ray Jones and Bob Riseborough also dominated in their 33-12 win over Ron Hornery and John Carr.

Rob Irving and Col Mudie played John Hodge and John Ward. This game started as a close tussle with the score 12 all after 12 ends. Rob and Col then won the next six ends to lead 25-12 and went on to win 26-18.
Steve Ryan and Col Hayward played John Keogh and Geoff Freeman. John and Geoff led 9-4 early in the game before Steve and Col, aided by some precision deviated bowls, won the next six ends to lead 18-9 and then extended their lead to 22-10 after 17 ends. John and Geoff scored nine shots on the next three ends but their charge was cut short by Steve and Col who scored three shots on the last end to win 25-19.

RULE OF THE WEEK
It has been suggested that a rule be explained each week. I will start with one that I’m sure many of us have infringed.
Position on the mat when delivering a bowl or jack: “Before delivery a player should be standing on the mat with one foot fully on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or a bowl, the player should have all or part of one foot on or above the mat”. If the bowler does not meet this criteria they are “foot faulting” and an umpire should firstly warn the bowler and if it occurs again during the match, have the players bowl stopped and the bowl declared dead.

Happy bowling.
