Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
PENNANTS
Round 5 of the Pennants was played on Sunday with the club recording two very good wins but lost the other two matches.
Grade 5 have an excellent chance of winning the Zone 4 pennant flag following their very good win over Gilgandra at Parkes. They had an overall shots win of 82-44 and a 6-0 win.
They only need to win one of the three rinks in their final match against Dubbo City on Sunday to claim the title.
Results of individual matches were:
Mick Craft, John Carr, Peter McPhee and Keith MacRae scored 17 shots, in winning six of the last seven ends, to record a big 33-15 win.
Greig Ball, Mark Dwyer, Col Mudie and Arthur Corbett won 10 of the last 11 ends to also record a big win 30-11.
Matt Parker, Greg Fisher, John O’Malley and Warren Bevan came from behind to complete the three rink win with a narrow 19-18 win.
Grade 1 played the more fancied West Dubbo team at Parkes and won 67-55 overall shots and a 5-1 win. Results of the individual matches were:
Geoff Freeman, Warwick Parker, John Davies and Graham Fliedner scored 20 of the last 22 shots of their match to record a convincing 31-14 win.
Dave Johnson, John Corcoran, Robert Corbett and Michael Went fought hard but eventually lost 22-16.
Graham Barby, Tony Bright, Tom Casey and Col Hayward came from behind to win narrowly 20-19.
Grade 6 played Forbes at Forbes and lost 83-41 overall shots and a 6-0 loss. Results of individual matches were:
Norm Keane, Steve Ryan, Dave Buggie and Terry Hetherington lost 31-17.
Max Tomkins, Noel Nicholson, Craig Henry and John Ward lost 28-10.
John Dunn, Wally Austin, Mike Valentine and Kevin Hynds lost 24-14.
Grade 7 played Forbes at Parkes and were beaten 58-50 overall shots and a 5-1 loss. Results of individual matches were:
Ron Murray, Bernie Mitchell, Wally Grant and Bruce Orr won 21-20.
Don Littlewood, Tony Byrne, Col Woods and Greg Townsend lost 19-15.
Jono Austin, Bill Skinner, Steve Mills and Ted Wright won 19-14.
Next Sunday Grade 1 plays Narromine at Narromine, Grade 5 plays Dubbo City at Dubbo City, Grade 6 and Grade 7 play Railway Diggers at Parkes Bowling & Sports.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Six matches were played on Saturday.
In a high quality Major Singles match, Bruce Orr played Tony Bright. This was a very closely contested match with the scores being tied nine times during the marathon 42 end encounter. Tony gained a mini break to lead 29-26 after 37 ends. Bruce scored one shot on each of the last five ends to claim victory 31-29. In the other Major Singles match Keith MacRae dominated against Wilbur Harris, winning 31-11.
In Major Pairs Graham Barby and John Davies led all the way in their 29-15 win over Dean Searl and Warren Bevan.
Three Minor Pairs matches were played.
Terry Hetherington and George Boatswain won five of the last six ends in defeating John Dunn (sub) and Peter McPhee 24-14.
Allan Affleck and Joe Crowley played Craig Henry and John O’Malley. Allan and Joe led 18-16 after 17 ends. Craig and John won three of the last four ends to claim a narrow 22-19 victory.
Mick Craft and Greg Fisher played Steve Turner and Wally Austin. Mick and Greg held a handy 15-7 lead after 13 ends. Steve and Wally then won the next six ends to level at 15 all. The last two hotly contested ends saw Mick and Greg prevail to take the match 18-15.
PUBLIC INVITATION BOWLS DAY
The club is holding a special bowls day on Saturday 12th April. All community members are invited to come along and enjoy a social game of bowls. Whether you are a current bowler or have never played, we invite everyone to come along to this special day. Plenty of prizes will be on offer for both bowlers and non bowlers. Names in by 12:30 for a 1:00pm start.
SOCIAL
Tuesday, 1st April, saw 18 bowlers play in the Twilight Jackpot Bowls. Three games of Pairs and one game of Triples were played.
In the Triples game Stewart Kelly, Tom Furey and Kevin Hynds scored four shots on the last end to win a close game 14-9 over John Watson, Shannon Birmingham and Graham Barby.
Liz Byrne and Mark Dwyer only lost four ends in their 20-5 win over Ron Murray and Greg Townsend.
After the score was 11 all, Mike Phillips and John Ward scored nine shots on the last four ends to defeat Mick Horan and Joan Simpson 20-11.
Les Kent and Wally Austin won six of the last seven ends to defeat Bob Freeman and Gary McPhee 15-9.
Six lucky bowlers won vouchers.
The jackpot was not won and increased to $360. New bowlers are welcome with players needing to have their names in by 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start.
A very good field of 32 bowlers played on Thursday afternoon. It was very pleasing to see a number of the Thursday Twilight bowlers participating. Two games of Triples and five games of Pairs were played.
Allan Affleck, Col Woods and Wally Austin led all the way in their 24-10 win over Bob Freeman, Gordon Dickson and John Ward.
The other triples game saw a great tussle between two very competitive teams. Tony Byrne, Kevin Hynds and Col Mudie won five of the last six ends to draw 17 all with Les Kent, Ron Hornery and Col Hayward. Team Mudie won the ends 12-9.
John Harrison (Peak Hill) and Warren Bevan played Mick Blunt and John Corcoran. After losing the first two ends, John and Warren won the next seven ends on their way to a good 23-11 lead. Mick and John won the last few ends to reduce the margin to 23-17. Once again Warren played excellent bowls and showed why he is regarded as the form bowler of the club.
Steve Turner and John Hodge played Mike Valentine and Greig Ball. Mike and Greig lead 18-9 after 10 ends. Steve and John then won the next six ends to hit the lead 19-18. The last few ends were very even, resulting in a 21 all score after 20 ends. Steve and John scored two shots on the last end to win a very close and entertaining game 23-21.
In another very close game, Norm Keane and Gary McPhee scored two shots on the last end to snatch a 17-16 win over Ray Jones and Steve Ryan.
Bill Skinner and Terry Hetherington lead all the way in their 21-12 win over John Dunn and John Carr.
The last game was a very one sided affair. John Watson and Graham Barby only lost five ends in a very convincing 28-5 win over Ian Mill and Geoff Freeman. John played very good bowls right through the game and was clearly man of the match.
Major winners were Tony Byrne, Kevin Hynds and Col Mudie and the minor winners were Allan Affleck, Col Woods and Wally Austin.
Saturday saw 28 bowlers play seven games of social Pairs. This gave a total of 48 members playing either championship or social bowls.
After leading 19-5, Dave Buggie and Gary McPhee survived a fight back from Noel Nicholson and Ron Hornery, hanging on to win 26-20.
Liz Byrne and John Carr won seven of the last eight ends in defeating Norm Keane and Mike Valentine 23-14.
Trevor Collison (SA) and Arthur Corbett led all the way in their 27-13 win over Bob Freeman and Tom Casey.
Ray Jones and John Hodge came from behind, winning the last three ends, to defeat Max Tomkins and Greig Ball 21-17.
Ron Murray and Kevin Hynds also came from behind, winning the last two ends, to defeat Ron Fisher and Col Mudie 19-17.
Rhona Went and John Ward scored a 23-17 win over Bill Skinner and Dave Johnson.
Col Woods and Geoff Freeman won the last two ends to defeat Steve Mills and Col Hayward 23-20.
Major winners were Ray Jones and John Hodge and the minor winners were Dave Buggie and Gary McPhee.
Members are reminded of the new times for social bowls following the completion of daylight saving. Names need to be in by 12:30pm for a 1:00pm start.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
Only six bowlers graced the greens and played a game of Triples.
Bill Wyatt, Mick Blunt and Chris Dunn had a good 20-11 win over Ian Brown, Allan Affleck and Mike Phillips.
Voucher winners were Chris Dunn and Bill Wyatt.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000.
Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
