Here's the latest from the bowlie.
Open Pairs Event.
We had a great response to this event with twenty-six teams entering, with entries from down the road at Parkes Railway/Diggers Club and as far away as Griffith.
The weather was kind to us and the competition was fierce but very friendly and a great weekend was had by all.
The event got away early on Saturday morning and each team played three games of Pairs of fifteen ends.
By the end of the day five teams had won all three games. The team from Grenfell, J. Bradtke and N. Walter won three games and had an aggregate “for and against” of 17. The Griffith team of Rod McDonald and Neville Cullen was also on 3/17 and three local sides also had won all three games. Paul Henry and Garry Carberry were on 3/42, Maree Grant and Tom Furey were on 3/ 34 and Pat Cooney and Chris Dunn were on 3/19.
The weather continued to be fine on Sunday for the last two games of fifteen ends each.
At the end of the day the team from Grenfell, Bradtke and Walter, playing some great Bowls, were the only team to have won all five games and they claimed the Major Prize of $900.
Second place went to Paul Henry and Garry Carberry who won four games and drew the fifth.
Third place went to Pat Cooney and Chris Dunn with four wins.
Fourth place, also with four wins but a slightly smaller “for and against”, went to Maree Grant and Tom Furey.
Fifth place, also with four wins, went to Rod McDonald and Neville Cullen from Griffith.
Many thanks to all the bowlers who supported the event and those who gave so much time to prepare the greens, organise the matches and prepare the food and to the bar staff who catered for a lot of thirsty bowlers.
Our special thanks to the Major Sponsor of the event, Casey Surveying and Design, and the Associate Sponsors, Telescope Tyres and Parkes Courier Service – your generosity is appreciated.
It was a great weekend and hopefully we will see you all again next year.
Visit by ACT Travelling Bowlers
On Thursday, May 12 a team of bowlers from the ACT visited the Club. After having a great lunch the visitors were joined by 37 club members and a total of seventy-two bowlers took to the greens for an afternoon of Mixed Triples.
In what was a very close match, Ron Hornery teamed up with visitors P. Maher and J. Howard to play Joe Crowley and visitors J. Gerakiteys and L. Canning. The scores were fairly even throughout the match but with one end to play Joe’s team lead 19 -17. The last end was won by Ron’s team by two shots and they drew the match 19 all.
A team of visitors, J. Mc Caskill, K. Schipp and N. Wills, had a great game against the all local team of Tom Furey, Rose Mitchell and Brenda Davies. After seven ends the local team had a lead of 12 – 4 but by the twelfth end the visitors had come back to level the scores 13 all. At the start of the seventeenth end the scores were again level 19 all and with one end to play the visitors lead by two shots. On the last end Tom’s team managed to win by three shots to take the match 24 – 23.
Prize winners on the day were local bowlers - John Hodge, John Dunn, Guy Ellery, Glenda Carty, Garry McPhee, Keith MacRae, Chris Dunn and Mike Valentine. Prizes were also won by visitors John Howard, Peter Cooper, Jan Taylor, K. McCaskill, J. Gerakiteys, Yvonne Hawthorn and Dom Travato.
Many thanks to all those involved in organising the bowls and providing lunch for the visitors. I think everybody enjoyed a great day and we look forward to meeting up with the ACT bowlers sometime in the future.
