MIXED FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP
Hilda McPherson, Robert Corbett, Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward are the 2013 Mixed Four Champions. They defeated Chris Dunn, Elaine Miller, Steve Turner and Pat Cooney in a very tight final 22-21.
In the earlier games two quarter-final matches were played on Saturday.
Hilda McPherson, Robert Corbett, Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward only lost six ends in their 25-7 victory over Marie Grant, Wally Grant, Liz Byrne and Keith MacRae.
The other match saw Laurie Keane, Mick Craft, Helen Heraghty and Tony Bright up against Chris Dunn, Elaine Miller, Steve Turner and Pat Cooney. Tony Bright’s team won 13 of the 21 ends. All these ends were one shot ends. Although Pat Cooney’s team only won eight ends, they scored three big multiple shot ends to win the match 20-13.
Semi-finals were played Sunday morning.
The first semi saw Mavis Gray, Terry Hetherington, Robyn Morgan and Geoff Freeman play Hilda McPherson, Robert Corbett, Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward. The Hayward team led 10-0 after four ends and 15-7 after 12 ends. The Freeman team fought back to only trail by two shots, 16-18, after 17 ends. Col’s team steadied and won three of the last four ends to win the match 22-17.
The other semi saw Brenda Davies, Brett Frame, Cherie Frame and Graham Fliedner play Chris Dunn, Elaine Miller, Steve Turner and Pat Cooney. The Cooney team got away to a great start and led 12-0 after five ends and then 20-4 after ten ends. The Fliedner team made a comeback but were unable to bridge the gap. Pat’s team went on to win 28-15.
The final on Sunday afternoon saw Col Hayward’s team play Pat Cooney’s team. This was a very close and entertaining match where the scores were tied on four occasions during the match. Col’s team scored one shot on the penultimate end to lead 22-19. Pat’s team needed three shots to force another end but unfortunately they could only score two shots to give Col’s team the win by the narrowest possible margin. Congratulations to Col’s team on their win. Congratulations must also go to Pat’s team who won their first two games against very strong teams and came within one shot of winning the final. Pat played exception bowls throughout the weekend and would deservedly be awarded the player of the championship.
