Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
First of all, I hope all the Bowlers out there, and their relatives and friends, had a great Christmas and that 2017 will turn out to be the year they all hope for.
Bowls continued over the Festive Season and though, as would be expected, numbers were down, a lot of great bowls was played in spite of the high temperatures on most days. I don’t intend to go into great detail as space is limited but some close games were played, and some not so close. Three of the games played on the New Year’s Day holiday, Monday January 2 resulted in close score lines. Arthur Corbett and John Hodge trailed early in their match against Tom Furey and Gary McPhee. After four ends Tom & Gary lead 5-1, but Arthur and John picked up five shots on the sixth end to lead by one shot. From there on the scores were always close until the eighteenth end when Tom and Gary lead 19 -14. Over the last three ends Arthur and John scored four shots to one, but Tom and Gary held on to win 20 -18.
In another close game Col Woods and Bernie Mitchell somehow managed to score nine shots (maybe they counted the jack) on one end but still went down 23-25 to John Dunn and Gordon Dickson.
Col Hayward and Jim Blake scored a narrow 15-12 win against Geoff and Bob Freeman.
Perhaps the most unusual “score” recorded was on Christmas Eve when the score card showed – “Nimo” Mills and John Carr “A Lot” and Guy Ellery and Keith MacRae – “not many”
Social Bowls.
The year got off to a good start with twenty six players turning out on Thursday and Saturday.
Thursday, January 5.
Three games of Pairs and one of Triples were played and the field included Vic McGlashan, visiting from the Mid North Coast and his son Mitch who teamed up against John Corcoran and John Carr. Vic and Mitch got off to a flying start to lead 4-0 after three ends. By the end of the eleventh end the two Johns had taken the lead 11-9. From there on scores remained close until the two Johns scored five shots on the second last end to lead 21-14. Although Vic and Mitch won the last end the two Johns ran out winners 21-17.
In the other pairs matches results were;
Keith Macrae and Col Woods had a narrow win over Col Mudie and Gordon Dickson, 23-18.
Tom Furey and Gladrin Sun were too strong for John Ward and Bruce Orr.
Guy Ellery and Graham Dixon defeated Steve Turner and John Dunn.
Col Hayward and John Keogh had a convincing win over John Hodge and Rob Irving.
The Triples match was won by Gary McPhee, John Watson and Jim Blake who had a win against Ron Hornery, George Bradley and Bob Freeman.
Prizes on the day were won by Guy Ellery and Graham Dixon and the Runners-up were Col Hayward and John Keogh.
Saturday, December 17
In a low scoring game John Corcoran and Ray Jones did battle with John “Joe” Davies and Steve Ryan.
I think it is the first time I have seen a score card that shows all ends as being won by one or two shots.
Joe and Steve took the lead 4-3 after five ends only to lose it again on the sixth end when John and Ray scored two shots. John and Ray continued to hold off Joe and Steve until the second last end, when Joe and Steve scored two shots to regain the lead 15-14. Not to be outdone John and Ray scored one on the last end to draw the match 15 all and claim the victory, having won eleven of the twenty-one ends played.
In another close match Dave Johnson and Rhona Went proved too good for Col Hayward and George Bradley, winning 20-18.
The other Pairs matches resulted as follows;
Col Mudie and Martin Tighe had a good win against Warren Bevan and John Hodge.
Arthur Corbett and Steve “Nimo” Mills were too strong for Gary McPhee and Greg Townsend.
Rob Irving and Col Woods defeated John Ward and Bob Freeman.
In the Triples match, Wally Grant, John Watson and Jim Blake had a win against Keith MacRae, Gordon Dickson and Greg Huggins.
The Prize for the day went to the winning Triples team and the Runners-up were John Corcoran and Ray Jones.
