Here's the latest from the bowlie.
Zone Championships.
Our District Fours Champions, Tom Furey, Tom Casey, Michael Went and Graham “Flip” Fliedner, travelled to Grenfell last weekend to contest the Zone Championships.
On Saturday morning they were drawn to play Cowra. In a very close match our team held game shots on the last end but with the last bowl of the match Cowra’s skip drew the shot and won the match for Cowra.
In the Final, played on Sunday, Gulgong proved too strong for Cowra and won the match 19 – 13 to claim the Zone Fours Championship for 2016.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, August 20 Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris advanced to the Final of the Minor Pairs Championship with a convincing win over Gary and Peter McPhee
Social Bowls.
Thursday, August 18.
Eighteen players turned out for three games of Pairs and one of Triples.
In the Triples match, the team of Mike Valentine, John Keogh and Bernie Mitchell got away to a great start and after three ends had a 5 – 0 lead over Gladrin Sun, John Dunn and Bill Skinner. Mike’s team maintained the lead and after the thirteenth end lead 19 – 3. Gladrin’s team won seven of the last eight ends but could not quite bridge the gap and Mike’s team won 20 - 18.
In the Pairs matches, Lee Hetherington and Ted Wright had a good win over Ron Hornery and Steve Ryan. Rob Irving and Les Kent were too strong for Graham Dixon and James Jennings. The other match was won by Col Hayward and Jim Blake against Keith MacRae and Gordon Dickson.
The Prize for the day went to Col Hayward and Jim Blake and the Runners up were Lee Hetherington and Ted Wright.
Saturday, August 20.
In addition to the Minor Pairs game, twelve players played three games of Pairs.
Liz Byrnes and Gordon Dickson won the first end and maintained the lead throughout the match for a convincing win against Joe Crowley and Jim Blake.
Rhona Went and Les Kent also had a good win over John Dunn and Rob Irving.
Steve Mills and Ray Jones convincingly beat Dave Johnson and Gladrin Sun, helped by scoring a maximum eight shots on the thirteenth end (the first time I have seen this happen).
Prize winners on the day were Liz Byrne and Gordon Dickson.
Charity Bowls Day.
On Sunday, August 21 the Club hosted a fundraising event on behalf of the local Cancer Council group. A good field of about 40 players turned out for two games of bowls,a great luch and a really fun day with all proceeds going to the Cancer Council.
Many thanks to the main organisers of the day, Phil Betts and Anne Marie Grant, and the main sponsors, The Club, Steve Skinner, Geoff Freeman and Cunninghams IGA and all the other people who donated prizes for the raffle and the winners draw.
Thanks also to Col Mudie and Gladrin Sun who prepared the BBQ lunch.
Finally, thank you to all those who turned out to play bowls or otherwise support the day.
