Frame Major Singles Champion

Club Championships.
After a hectic week of matches, Brett Frame has emerged as the Major Singles Champion for 2016.
In a quarter-final of the Major Singles Championship, Graham “Flip” Fliedner and John Corcoran Played 35 ends before a winner was found. After ten ends, scores were level 8 all then John scored eight shots on the next four ends to lead 16 – 8. Graham gradually got back in to the match and after twenty ends scores were again level 18 all. The next seven ends were fairly evenly divided and after 27 ends Graham had taken the lead 24 – 23. Six of the last eight ends were decided by a single shot but Graham had the better of the close stages and finally claimed victory 31 – 26 and advance to the semi- final.
The semi-final between Brett and Graham was played on the morning of Sunday, July 3. The early ends were fairly even and after thirteen ends the scores were level 10 all before Brett won nine of the next twelve ends to lead 23-13 at the start of the twenty-sixth end. Graham recovered and at the end of the thirtieth end Brett’s lead had been cut to two shots, 23-21 but Brett went on the win the match 31 – 22 after thirty-five ends.
The final, between Brett and John Hodge was played that afternoon and after a close match Brett scored four shots on the thirty-second end to win the match 31-22 and claim the 2016 Major Singles Championship. Congratulations to Brett on his win and to John, a worthy runner-up.
The make-up of the Major Pairs Championship was also decided when Brett Frame teamed with Paul Henry to play John Corcoran and Tom Casey in the second semi-final.
In a very close match the lead was never more than three shots and with two ends to play the scores were level at 13 –all. Brett and Paul managed to win the last two ends to take the match 19-13 and win the right to play Dave Johnson and Graham Fliedner in the Final.
A Minor Pairs Championship match also produced a close result when Peter and Gary McPhee scored a 25-24 win over Steve “Nimo” Mills and Bernie Mitchell.
Social Bowls.
Thursday, June 30.
Eighteen players turned out to play three games of Pairs and one of Triples.
In a close Pairs match John Ward and Ray Jones won the early ends against John Corcoran and Mike Valentine, to lead 8-2 after four ends. John and Mike fought back to lead 9-8 after seven ends. The next seven ends went to John and Ray and they lead 23 -9 after fourteen ends. The last seven ends were won by John and Mike but they could only score eleven shots and the match was won by John and Ray, 23-20.
Another Pairs matches was won by Brett Frame and John Hodge and the other one was won by Les Kent and John Dunn.
In the Triples match, the team of Col Mudie, Gladrin Sun and Bob Freeman lead 10 -3 after six ends before beating Geoff Freeman, George Bradley and Greg Huggins 26 – 23.
Prize winners were Brett Frame and John Hodge.
Saturday, July 2.
In addition to the Championship matches, a small field of ten players played a game of Pairs and one of Triples.
John Davies and Mark Dwyer had a close win over Col Hayward and John Hodge and in the Triples match Ray Jones, Col Woods and Greg Huggins were too strong for Arthur Corbett, John Carr and Gordon Dickson.
Prizes went to Gary and Peter McPhee.
Sunday, July 3.
In a No. 2 Pennants practice match, the team of Graham Fliedner, Tom Casey, Tom Furey and Peter McPhee played a close game against the team of John Davies, Col Hayward, Mark Dwyer and Geoff Freeman. After a close struggle in the early ends John’s team eventually got the upper hand and after fifteen ends had an eight shot lead, 18-10. Graham’s team scored ten shots on the next three ends and with three ends to play had a two shot advantage, 20 -18. John’s team won the next two ends to tie the score 20 all but Graham’s team won the last end to win the match 23 -20.
In a social Triples match Col Mudie, Steve Turner and Brenda Davies were too strong for the team of John Corcoran, Mike Valentine and Bob Freeman.
UPCOMING BOWLS EVENTS
Next Sunday, July 10 all members are invited to play a social game (1.00 pm start). All proceeds will be used to assist the No. 2 Pennants side who will be travelling to Ettalong to represent the club in the State Pennants Finals.
July 30 to August 1st - the State Finals of the No. 2 Pennants will be played at Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club.
The Zone 4 Championships will be held in August – more details later.

Come along and buy the winning tickets in the “Early Birds” meat tray raffle at about 6.15pm followed by the major raffle with prizes of meat trays, vouchers and cash which will be drawn at about 8 o’clock.
Great Pub style meals are available at reasonable prices from Mel’s Restaurant.
The Badge Draw, worth $1300 this week, will be drawn after the raffles.
