Handicap Pairs & Singles Decided

Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mike Valentine is the Handicap Singles champion for 2013, defeating Col Hayward in the final 25-9.
15 bowlers contested the event last weekend. The first round scores were: Noel Nicholson def Ron Murray 25-18, Mike Valentine def John Ward 25-20, George Boatswain def Norm Keane 25-21, Steve Mills def Gary McPhee 25-24, Keith Alexander def Joe Crowley 25-16, Wally Grant def Wally Austin 25-20, and Col Hayward def Kevin Hynds 25-17.
The quarter-finals saw Greig Ball def Wally Grant 25-17, Col Hayward def Steve Mills 25-18, George Boatswain def Keith Alexander 25-19, and Mike Valentine def Noel Nicholson 25-17.
In the semi-finals Mike Valentine def George Boatswain 25-16 and Col Hayward def Greig Ball 25-14.
In the final Mike had an eight shot handicap advantage over Col. Mike dominated the early ends and got out to lead 14-1. He only allowed Col to score on six ends as he continued to play very consistent bowls and ran away with the match, winning 25-9. It was very pleasing to see Mike win this event as he was the runner-up in 2012.
The final of the Handicap Pairs was also played on Sunday.
Greig Ball and Tom Casey played Gordon Dickson and Col Hayward.
Greig and Tom went out to a handy lead of 13-4 after 11 ends. Gordon and Col then won three of the next four ends to trail by just one shot 14-13. Greig and Tom played more consistent bowls than their opposition over the concluding ends and wrapped up the match with three shots on the 20th end which gave them an unbeatable lead of 23-14. Congratulations to Greig and Tom on a very good win.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
16 bowlers turned out to try to try their luck with the $1000 jackpot.
Mick Blunt and Greg Townsend played Alan Affleck and Steve Turner. Alan and Steve led 12-9, only to see Mick and Greg score 11 shots on the last three ends to win the match 20-12.
Paul Townsend and Mal Porter scored three shots on the last two ends in winning a close match against Ben Townsend and Mike Parkes 17-13.
Rob Irving and Tom Furey had a hard fought win over Guy Ellery and Peter ten Cate 14-10.
Tom Cole and Don Littlewood only lost three ends in recording a 15-4 win over Bob Freeman and Keith Hutchison.
Voucher winners were Mick Blunt, Don Littlewood, Keith Hutchison, Bob Freeman and Tom Cole.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000.
Come along next Sunday for a game, a sausage sizzle, and to be in the running for the $1000 jackpot.
SOCIAL
Thursday saw 30 bowlers playing six games of pairs and one triples.
In the triples match Bob Freeman, Keith Alexander and Col Hayward played Tom Cole, Rob McNaughton (The Entrance) and Geoff Freeman. Bob, Keith and Col led 9-0 early before Tom, Rob and Geoff fought back to trail 15-11 after 18 ends. Unfortunately for them, Bob, Keith and Col won the last three ends and won the match 20-11.
Noel Nicholson and Col Mudie played Alan Hockey and Mike Valentine. Only three shots separated the two teams after 10 ends. Noel and Col then won eight of the last eleven ends to run out big winners 30-13.
Joe Crowley and Craig Henry only lost five ends in recording a good win over Bill Skinner and Gary McPhee 24-10.
Bernie Mitchell and Wally Austin played Gordon Dickson and Terry Hetherington. Bernie and Wally got out to lead 19-4 after 12 ends and went on to win 25-15.
John Keogh and Keith MacRae played Guy Ellery and John Hodge. In a close match Guy and John prevailed 18-15.
Ray Jones and Steve Ryan were too strong for Jim Jennings and Greig Ball, winning 27-14.
Tony Byrne, who put in a man of the match performance, and John Ward played Allan Wright and Norm Keane. Allan and Norm led 12-9 after 13 ends, before Tony and John stormed home, winning seven of the last eight ends, to win 23-13.
Thursday’s major prize winners were Guy Ellery and John Hodge and the minor winners were Tony Byrne and John Ward.
On Saturday 16 bowlers played four games of pairs.
Alan Affleck and Ray Jones finished strongly in their match against Tom Furey and Graham Dixon. They only held a narrow lead of 15-12 after 15 ends but then scored 14 shots in the last six ends to record a big win 29-12.
Liz Byrne and Dave Johnson played Laurie Keane and Keith MacRae. Laurie and Keith led 8-0 before Liz and Dave fought back to level the score 18all after 16 ends. Laurie and Keith then won the last five ends and ran out winners 30-18.
John Hodge and Ron Hornery played Tom Cole and Col Mudie. John and Ron, with the help of a maximum eight shots on the eighth end, led 23-6 after 12 ends. Tom and Col fought back and were only defeated by four shots with John and Ron hanging on to win 28-24.
Gordon Dickson and Tony Bright played Bob Freeman and Arthur Corbett. Gordon and Tony led 16-10 at the 15 end mark. Bob and Arthur won four of the next five ends to make a close finish. Gordon and Tony scored one shot on the last end to win 19-17.
Saturdays major prize winners were Col Hayward and Noel Nicholson and the minor winners were Wally Grant, Alan Affleck and Ray Jones.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
Thursday night saw 66 bowlers play in the twilight bowls competition. In a top of the table clash, Casey Surveying defeated Throw Together 14-10. Other good matches saw Golden Girls defeat Back Trundle Road 12-9 and Three Amigos defeat Uniting Church 14-10. Young Guns continued their improved form in recording a good win over Bat Girls 19-12. Bushies, in a complete form reversal, defeated High Rollers 21-10. The major prize winner’s were Tuff & Surf with Bartley-Barkers claiming the minor prize. The lucky loser’s prize winner was Crackerjacks.
GENERAL
The clubs Christmas raffle, with a value of approximately $1000, is up and running with tickets available on Friday nights as well as at the main bar anytime during the week.

The commencement time for both Thursday and Saturday bowls is 1pm. Names to be in by 12:30pm.
