Published by Johnny Perella in Bowls Notes • 6/6/2011 7:45:52 AM
Thursday bowls.
The starters were in good form as most of the games were pretty close affairs. The stand out game was a very narrow 16-15 win for Chris Millwood and Gordon Dickson over Ron Fisher and Greg Davies. Ray Jones and Stan Wright were also narrow winners, just getting up 19-17 against Noel Nicholson and Garry McPhee, as was Colin Hayward and John Keogh they just held off a determined challenge from Greig Ball and Graham Barby 18-16. The triples game was a ding dong battle with Graham Dixon, Wally Grant and Bill Wyatt desperately hanging on for a nail biting 18- 16 result against Terry Hetherington, Bernie Coleman and John Edwards. In other games Robert Tinker and Tony Byrne def Colin Mudie and John Dunn 39-14 and Arthur Corbett and Merv Hennock won in fine fashion against John Hodge and Mike Valentine 28-12.
Starting off mufti social this Thursday will be the hot pairing of Geoff Freeman and Keith MacRae.

Saturday Bowls.
On a wet afternoon social bowls games finished early, but championship matches had to play on despite conditions being at times very difficult. As usual there were a couple of upsets and some very fine contests played in the championship matches. In major singles cagey veteran John Corcoran continued his recent great form with a hard earned 31-27 win over former champ Paul Went. John had a sensational finish, on his last two ends he scored a three and a two to come from one shot behind for a well deserved victory. Also in major singles, young gun Josh Mills upstaged the very experienced Graham Barby. In a match lasting 38 ends Josh Led for most of the game and showed great determination and fighting spirit to hold on for a 31- 25 win against his more fancied opponent.

Probably the match of the day was a very exciting 23- 22 win to Jim Buckley and Tom Casey over Rob Tinker and John Hodge in a major pair’s quarter final. With the scores locked at 22 all going onto the last end both sides held the short several times and it took a great bowls by Jim to break the deadlock and secure a fine one shot win.
Tom Casey continued his charge in the afternoon for the minor singles title with a hard fought 31-24 win over a game Dave Worthington.

There were also two minor pairs matches played, and two of the main chances were on show. Looking definite contenders is father and son Paul and Ben Townsend following a tough 19-16 against the very consistent Dave Johnson and Craig Henry. Also staking a claim is Steve Ryan and Paul Henry after their last end 18-16 win against a very game Garry McPhee and John Edwards.

All of the social bowls stopped playing half way through as conditions were not pleasant and bowls were hard to handle. Best of the social games was a close 11-10 win for Geoff Freeman and Tom Hamilton against John Davies and Steve Turner.

Sunday Bowls.
Only a small field for Sunday morning social and there was just two games played.
Keith Hutchison, Kate Keogh and Callan Job won 21-6 against Julie Hamilton, Mick Holland and Elaine Burgess. The other game turned out to be a great result for Kevin Hynds and Gwenda Carty as after their 12 shot 20 – 8 win over Craig Cusack and Dave Johnson they picked up the Jackpot $600, not a bad mornings play.

The national Finance and Planning consistency competition for April – June finished last week and the winner was Josh Mills, he finished one point in front of the field after his exciting singles win on Saturday.
The consistency comp will have a few weeks off before resuming late July.
