Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
Club Championships.
On Saturday, July 22 Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris played a Minor Pairs match against Gordon Dickson and Greg Huggins. Steve and Wilbur got off to a dream start and won the first eight ends and went on to win the match convincingly and progress to the Semi-Final, where they will meet Les Kent and John Watson.
Social Bowls.
Thursday, July 20.
Eighteen bowlers contested three Pairs matches and one Triples match.
Warren Bevan and Bruce Deland had the best of the early ends against Col Hayward and John Hodge and lead 6-0 after four ends. Warren and Bruce maintained their lead and after eighteen ends had a good lead of 18-11. Col and John won the final three ends but just failed to catch Warren and Bruce going down by a single shot, 17-18.
The other two Pairs matches both ended with the same score line, 25-17. Geoff freeman and Bernie Mitchell defeated Graham Dixon and George Bradley and in the other match John Taylor and Jim Blake were too good for Ron Hornery and Greg Huggins.
The Triples match resulted in a good win for Keith MacRae, Gordon Dickson and Gladrin Sun against Steve Ryan, Ray Jones and Bob Freeman.
The Prize winners were Warren Bevan and Bruce Deland and the Runners-up prize went to the Triples team of Keith MacRae, Gordon Dickson and Gladrin Sun.
Saturday, July 22.
A field of twenty-four bowlers played three Pairs matches and two Triples matches.
In a very close match Steve Ryan and John Watson scored two shots to win the first end against Guy Ellery and John Carr and maintained the lead throughout the match, though only just. On a number of occasions Guy and John got within a single shot but with two ends to go Steve and John lead by four shots. Guy and John won the last two ends but could not score enough shots to draw the match. The winners were Steve and John by one shot, 18-17.
In another close match, the Triples team of Keith MacRae, Ray Jones and Jim Blake just got home against Arthur Corbett, Steve “Nimo” Mills and Isobel Svendsen, winning 18-16.
In the other matches:
Les Kent and Mike Valentine defeated Wally Grant and Ted Wright.
Col Hayward and John Hodge had a convincing win against John Davies and Ron Hornery.
In the Triples match, Gary McPhee, Liz Byrne and Bill Skinner proved far too strong for Geoff Freeman, Joe Crowley and Bob Freeman.
Charity Day in Support of Cancer Research.
On Sunday, the Club hosted a Charity Day on behalf of the local Cancer Research Support Group.
A Good field of forty bowlers and supporters turned out for a very enjoyable day of bowls and companionship, not to mention a great lunch provided by the willing workers from the Support group.
I don’t think anyone went home without a prize courtesy of the great sponsorship from local businesses and individuals.
As a result, a total of over $960 was raised and the Support Group would like to thank the many sponsors;
Stefan’s Hairdressers, Leonie’s Hairdressers, Tony Byrne, Phil Betts, Parkes Services Club, Parkes Leagues Club, The Star Hotel, Dwyer’s Butchery, Forbes Central Butchers, Johnson’s Bakery, IGA Supermarket, Coles Supermarket and D’ Aquino’s Liquor Store.
Also, we must thank the people who put so much time and effort into organising the day. Special thanks to Phil Betts, Graham Barby, Michael Craft, Chris Dunn, Maureen Stone, Bev Grange and Pat Cooney.
