STATE FINALS – GRADE 2 PENNANTS.
Our No. 2 Pennants team travelled to Ettalong Memorial Bowls Club last weekend to represent the Club in the State Finals.
Their were a couple of withdrawals from the original teams chosen due to ill health. Garry Carberry suffered a work injury in the weeks leading up to the Finals and Peter McPhee underwent an operation in the week before the Finals. The teams that went away were;
Brett Frame, Colin Hayward, Dave Johnson and John Hodge.
Grahem Fliedner, Tom Casey, Tom Furey and Geoff Freeman.
Michael Went, John Davies, Mark Dwyer and Paul Henry.
First Reserve was Steve Turner.
On Saturday morning they were drawn to play St. Johns Park, the team who were short priced favourites to win the State Championship. Our teams played some great bowls but had no answer to the bowls played by the very professional team from St. Johns Park who scored convincing wins on all three rinks.
The match on Saturday afternoon against Maitland was a lot closer. We managed to win one of the rinks but went down 50 – 65 on the overall score.
Sunday morning was our best result when we won two of the three rinks and the overall score 61 – 48.
Congratulations to all the players – it was a tremendous achievement making the State Finals.
The team would also like me to say thanks to Gwenda Carty for all her great work as Team Manager throughout the Pennant Season
In the Semi-finals played Sunday, August 1 St. Johns Park had a narrow win over Merrylands and will play Merimbula, who were too strong for Stockton in the other semi-final, for the State Championship on Monday, August 2.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, July 30 two games of Minor Singles were played. Which resulted in convincing wins for Greg Townsend over Jim Blake and Wally Grant over Craig Henry.

In the Triples match, the team of Dave Buggie, Rob Irving and Jim Blake got away to a great start and by the end of the seventh end had a lead of 10 – 1 over John Ward Gordon Dickson and Greg Huggins. Dave’s team maintained the lead and after the eighteenth end lead 18 – 11. John’s team won the remaining three ends but could only score six shots and went down by the narrowest margin, 18 – 17.
The Pairs matches were won by Col Hayward and Graham Barby over Tom Furey and John Hodge and in the other match Wally Grant and John Watson were too strong for Ted Wright and Gladrin Sun.
The Prize for the day went to the winning Triples team of Dave, Rob and Jim.
Saturday, July 30.

Last Friday was the last night for Mel’s Café due to Mel needing to concentrate on her other business at Café N’ Ate.
We are sorry to see you go Mel, but thanks for your great meals and service over the past few months.
As of this Friday we will have a new caterer, Meryl Ramsay, which means a new menu and I’m sure some great food at affordable prices.
