Casey & Ball make State Semi- Final

Casey and Ball make State semi-Finals.

Playing as Zone winners in the finals of the State Presidents Pairs, played at Port Macquarie over the weekend Tom Casey and Greig Ball made a valiant attempt and made it through to the semi-finals.
On Saturday they won first and second round matches, then backed up Sunday morning for the semi- final but were unfortunately beaten 22-19 by the eventual winners Gunnedah.
Thursday bowls.
Another change in format for social mufti with players playing consistency pairs, four points for shot, three for second, two for third and one point for fourth shot.
Still played over the usual 21 ends the games produced some pretty close results and created a lot of interest.
Tightest game was a thrilling draw as Rob Tinker and Jay Stephenson picked up a nine on the last end to force a 105 tie with Colin Hayward and Tony Byrne.
John Carr and Colin Woods just held off Graham Barby and Mike Parkes 107 – 103 and with exactly the same score Geoff Freeman and Don Littlewood finished powerfully to edge out Ted Wright and Tom Cole 107 – 103.
A full count of ten on the last end gave John Ward and Ron Hornery a narrow 106 – 104 win over John Hodge and John Keogh.
Also coming home with a big finish was Arthur Corbett and John Dunn they picked up 18 shots over the last three ends to win 107 – 103 against John Corcoran and Greg Fisher.
In higher scoring games Col Mudie and Kevin Hynds won 123 – 87 against Keith MacRae and Tom Hamilton and Graham Dixon and Greg Davies def Guy Bennett and Neville Whitfield 134 – 76.
Bruce Orr and Alan Tolhurst won 123 – 87 against Chris Millwood and M. Tigue.
A handicap pairs match was also played and Gordon Dickson and Mike Valentine def Terry Hetherington and Wally Austin 31-16.
Starters for this week’s social mufti will be Colin Mudie and Eddie McPhee.
Saturday Bowls.
There were 58 players gracing the greens last Saturday playing 10 hcp Pairs matches one major triples semi-final and three games of social bowls.
In the major triples semi Keith MacRae, Terry Hetherington and Dave Johnson scored a fine 24-19 win against Baldy Frame, Garry Went and Paul Henry.
In the handicap pairs most of the matches produced easy wins and there was only a few close results.
Best match was a come from behind 25-22 win for Ben Townsend and Ryan McLuckie over Guy Bennett and Steve Turner.
Next best Matches were a 23-17 win for Kevin Hynds and John Hodge against Eddie and Peter McPhee and Tom Hamilton and Tony Byrne with a hard fought 24-17 win against Tony Bright and Sheldon Orr.
Biggest winners on the day were Greg Fisher and Theo Holman as they completely outclassed Dave Worthington and Chris Dunn 33-7.
Of the social games the pick was a narrow 18-15 win to Bob Risebourgh and Tom Cole over Mike Valentine and Merv Hennock.
There will be more handicap pairs this Saturday and looking after proceedings will be Wally Austin and Greg Ball.
Sunday Bowls.
Three close games resulted from Sunday mornings social bowls the best of being a very narrow 17-15 win to George Boatswain and June Burgess over Geoff Freeman and Rhona Went,
A great finish saw Lorrane Heald and Marie Grant just edge out Chris Dunn and Elaine Burgess 14-12 and in the other game Steve Turner and Elaine Miller outlasted John Dunn and Ann Everett 14-10.
The jackpot remained intact and will move on to a healthy $560 for this week.
Coming Events.
•This Sunday the last semi-final of the minor triples will be played, and will feature Dave Worthington’s side up against Craig Cusack and his men, should be a close contest with the winners to play Tom Casey’s outfit in the final.
