The Final of the Major Pairs Championship was decided on Saturday, June 17, and what a final it turned out to be. It wasn’t until the eighth end that Warwick and Matt took the lead 9-7. By the fifteenth end they had increased their lead to seven shots, 20-13 but, with the help of a five on the eighteenth end Tom and Dave reduced the lead to two shots and with one end to play Warwick and Matt lead 22-20. On the final end, with only Tom’s last bowl to be played, Warwick and Matt were holding two shots and the match. With the last bowl of the match, Tom moved the jack back and he and Dave scored four shots to be crowned Major Pairs Champions for 2017.

Saturday, June 17.
Two games of Triples and one of Pairs were played as well as the Championship matches.
In the Pairs match, Ron Hornery combined with Gordon Dickson to play Arthur Corbett and Greg White, a visitor from Wangaratta in Victoria. The scores were fairly even throughout the match and it wasn’t until the fourteenth end that Arthur and Greg opened up the biggest lead of the day, four shots, and 13-19. With the help of a four on the sixteenth and a five on the eighteenth ends, Ron and Gordon fought back to win the match 21-17.
The team of John Ward, Rhona Went and Rob Irving had a hard fought battle with Col Hayward, Col Woods and Eileen Bradley. After twelve ends John’s team trailed, 7-8 but scored three shots on each of the next two ends to lead by five shots. On the last seven ends the teams went shot for shot with John’s team running our winners18-13.
In the other Triples match, Ted Wright, John Watson and George Bradley built up a strong lead in the first ten ends against Les Kent, Bill Skinner and Bob Freeman but George was feeling very nervous remembering that last week his team had lead 19-1 after ten ends and lost the match 21-19. Thankfully for George, there was no repeat of the collapse and Ted’s team went on to score a convincing win.
Prize winners on the day were Dave Johnson and Tom Furey and the Runners-up prize went to Rob Irving, Rhona Went and John Ward.
