Handicap Pairs Reach Semi Final Stage

HANDICAP PAIRS
Six matches were played over the past week.
Thursday afternoon saw John Watson and Col Mudie (sub) play Gordon Dickson and Col Hayward. After giving six shots start to their opposition Gordon and Col won 10 of the first 12 ends and held a 19-8 lead. John and Col fought back to only trail 16-20 after 18 ends. Gordon and Col claimed the next two ends and led 25-16. The last end saw Gordon and Col falter with John and Col playing great draw bowls and they picked up seven shots to go down narrowly 25-23.
Also on Thursday Ted Wright and Arthur Corbett played Mike Valentine (sub) and Wally Austin. Mike and Wally received three shots start and commenced well to lead 19-8 after 12 ends. They maintained a good margin and after 17 ends led 22-14. Ted and Arthur won the next three ends to trail 20-22 with one end to play. Mike and Wally scored one shot on the last end to record a well deserved 23-20 win.
Two matches were played on Saturday. The first match saw Wilbur Harris and John Corcoran play Bernie Mitchell and Nimo Mills with Bernie and Nimo receiving five shots start. Bernie and Nimo held a 17-11 lead before Wilbur and John won five consecutive ends to lead 26-17. Bernie and Nimo fought back and won four of the last five ends to go down narrowly 29-27.
The other match saw the father and son combination of Warwick and Matthew Parker up against Bob Freeman and Brett Frame. Bob and Brett received a four shot start and began well to lead 12-3 after seven ends. Warwick and Matthew won six of the next eight ends to see the score level at 15 all. They then picked up a four shot end before Bob and Brett won the next three ends to see the Parker’s hold a 19-18 lead with two ends to play. Warwick and Matthew held firm and claimed the last two ends and take the match 23-18.
Rob Irving and Chris Dunn (sub) played Ted Wright and Arthur Corbett on Sunday afternoon. Rob and Chris received four shots start and held an 11-4 lead after seven ends. Ted and Arthur won the next six ends to lead 18-11 and still held a 20-13 lead after 16 ends. Rob and Chris finished strongly winning the last five ends to draw the match 20 all.
Following the completion of the preliminary rounds the four top performing teams were:
1. Warwick and Matthew Parker
2. Gordon Dickson and Col Hayward
3. Rob Irving and Ray Jones
4. Ron Hornery and Graham Barby
The semi-finals will see 1 versus 4 and 2 versus 3. These matches are planned for this Saturday, September 19.
SOCIAL BOWLS
14 bowlers played social bowls on Thursday.
In the triples game George Bradley, Dean Searl and Warren Bevan led all the way in their 29-17 win over Bob Freeman, Rob Irving and Graham Barby.
John Keogh and Greg Howlett scored a hard fought 22-11 win over Ron Hornery and John Hodge.
Allan Wright and John Corcoran played Col Woods and Geoff Freeman. Allan and John held a 9-6 lead before Col and Geoff won six of the next seven ends to grab a 16-10 lead. The last six ends were very close with Col and Geoff hanging on to win 20-13.
Major prize winners were the handicap pairs team of Mike Valentine and Wally Austin with the minor prize winners being John Keogh and Greg Howlett.
Saturday saw 10 social bowlers join the handicap pairs match players.
In a hard fought triples game Gordon Dickson, Rob Irving and Chris Dunn had a narrow 20-18 win over Bruce Orr, Wally Grant and Joe Crowley.
The pairs game saw Guy Ellery and John Ward play John Carr and John Hodge. Guy and John had an early 7-0 lead. The two John’s then dominated the next 15 ends to hold a 20-11 lead. Guy and John scored nine shots in winning the last three ends to draw the game 20 all. John Carr and John Hodge won the ends 11-10.
Prize winners were John Carr and John Hodge.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
Owing to the ladies classic pairs carnival no jackpot bowls were played last Sunday.
The jackpot remains at $1000. Come along for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30 for a 10:00am start.
STATE ROOKIES PAIRS
The first round of the event will be held at Parkes Railway Diggers on Saturday where Tom Furey will team with Railway Diggers bowler Tony Latter. Tom has already progressed to the second round of the Rookies Singles which is being held in Dubbo on September 26-27.
AERO BOWLS PRESENTATION
Unfortunately the presentation set down for tomorrow has been cancelled owing to staffing problems with Aero Bowls.

Friday night raffles are on where patrons have the chance to win meat trays, shopping vouchers and cash prizes. Members badge draw this Friday is $2000.
The Parkes Bowling & Sports Club AGM is being held at the club on Monday, September 21 commencing at 7:00pm.
