Zone Play Offs For Pennant Teams

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
A Minor Pairs match was played last Saturday with Jim Blake and Joe Crowley up against John Watson and Les Kent.
Jim and Joe won seven of the first nine ends and led 9-2. John and Les then won six of the next eight ends to narrow the margin to 13-9. The last four ends were hard fought with both teams playing some great bowls, however Jim and Joe managed to score one shot on each of the last four ends to run out 17-9 winners. Jim, a new bowler and playing in his first club event, played very good bowls in his man of the match performance.
SOCIAL BOWLS
A big field of 30 bowlers played on Thursday afternoon.
After leading 13-12, Nathan Wills, Craig Henry and Gary McPhee scored 13 shots in winning the next three ends to grab a commanding 26-12 lead over Bob Freeman, Dave Buggie and Geoff Freeman. Bob, Dave and Geoff won four of the last five ends to reduce Nathan, Craig and Gary’s winning margin to 29-18.
Bruce Deland and Warren Bevan had a good 21-13 win over Graham Dixon and Baldy Frame.
Ron Fisher and John Hodge had a 23-13 win over Ted Wright and Steve Ryan.
Les Kent and Keith MacRae played great bowls to defeat Bill Skinner and Graham Barby 28-10.
After the score was tied 15 all after 15 ends, John Watson and Ron Hornery won five of the last six ends to defeat Jim Blake and John Ward 25-16.
After trailing 12-17, Rob Irving and John Carr won seven of the last eight ends to record a narrow 22-20 win over Guy Ellery and Mike Valentine.
In a game were the lead changed 12 times, Greg Howlett and Tom Furey prevailed 19-17 over John Dunn and Col Mudie.
The major prize winners were Greg Howlett and Tom Furey with the minor prize winners being John Watson and Ron Hornery.
Saturday saw 20 social bowlers join the minor pairs players.
After holding a 14-1 lead, Rob Irving and John Ward maintained the pressure and went on to defeat Bernie Mitchell and Nimo Mills 30-12.
Bill Skinner and John Hodge finished strongly to record a 23-13 win over Bob Freeman and Ron Fisher.
Gordon Dickson and John Dunn won 11 of the first 12 ends to hold a commanding 23-2 lead over Col Woods and Mike Valentine. They went on to win 29-11.
After leading 26-8, Chris Dunn and Liz Byrne survived a late rally from Gladrin Sun and Ray Jones to record a 26-20 win.
The last game saw Geoff Freeman and Tom Furey up against Dave Johnson and Baldy Frame. This was a high quality game with good bowls being played by all players resulting in some very tight heads. Geoff and Tom managed to produce one or two decisive bowls on the majority of ends which saw their lead gradually grow. The final score of 28-9 was not a true indication of the game.
Major prize winners were Gordon Dickson and John Dunn with the minor prize winners being Chris Dunn and Liz Byrne.
PENNANTS
Both Grade 2 and Grade 5 teams are playing this weekend in the zone playoffs to decide who represents the zone at the state titles. Grade 2 will travel to Dubbo to play Baradine, while Grade 5 will be at Narromine playing a round robin event against Coonamble, Manildra and Wallerawang.
Grade 2 team members are:
Paul Henry, Mark Dwyer, John Davies , Garry Carberry, Geoff Freeman, Tom Furey, Tom Casey, Graham Fliedner, Peter McPhee, Dave Johnson, Col Hayward and Brett Frame. Manager is Gwenda Carty.
Grade 5 team members are:
John Hodge, Greg Townsend, Dean Searl, Warren Bevan, Ron Hornery, Craig Henry, Steve Ryan, Col Mudie, Mike Valentine, John Carr, John Ward and John O’Malley. Manager is Pat Cooney.
The teams played a very competitive trial game against each other on Sunday to help ready themselves for next weekend.
SUNDAY BOWLS
Come along to the club next Sunday for a bowls, beer and footy afternoon. Names to be in by 1pm with play commencing at 1:30pm. At the completion of the bowls you can enjoy a complimentary hotdog and watch the NRL game on the big screen. Cost is $10 per person.
