Here's the latest from the bowlie.
PENNANTS.
Playing on their home greens the Grade 2 and Grade 5 sides both had good wins but the Grade 7 side went down in a close match at Parkes Railway/Diggers Club.
The Grade 2 side won all three games against Grenfell and won the aggregate score 68 – 50. Col Hayward’s team won 21 – 16 and Graham Fliedner’s team won by the same margin, 25 -20. In the other game Garry Carberry’s side won 22 – 14.
The Grade 5 side also won all three games against Caragabal and scored 75 – 52. Col Mudie’s team had a big win, 34 – 15 and Warren Bevan’s side got home 18 – 15. In a close game John Corcoran’s team had a one shot win, 23 – 22.
At the Parkes Railway Club the Grade 7 side won two of the three games but lost the overall score by two shots 59 – 61. Keith MacRae’s team won 23 – 20 and Greg Townsend’s team also had a win 22-13.
In the other game George Boatswains team went down 13 – 22.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, April 2, three games of Major Singles and one game of Major Pairs were played.
In a singles match, John Hodge had the better of the opening ends to lead Wally Grant 14 – 3 after seven ends before Wally got back in to the game and after nineteen ends John lead 19 – 15. Wally out-scored John for the next seven ends to tie the score 23 all. The score was tied again at 30 all, and John scored the shot he needed to win the match, 31-30, after 34 ends.
The singles match between Col Hayward and Steve Turner was also fairly close. Steve won the first five ends to lead 10 – 0 and continued to play well to lead 21 -6 after seventeen ends. Col won nine of the next twelve ends and cut Steve’s lead to 3 shots after twenty-nine ends, 24-21. Steve finally scored the winning shot after thirty-seven ends to take the match 31 – 27.
The other singles match went to Mark Dwyer over Col Mudie and in the pairs match, Michael and Garry Went proved too strong for George Boatswain and Bernie Mitchell.
EASTER MONDAY PAIRS EVENT.
This event, sponsored by Rob and Joyce Irving, attracted a large field of 44 bowlers, including a visitor from Devonport in Tasmania – Rod Davey.
Each team played two games of Pairs of ten ends each game.
Thanks to the generosity of the Sponsors, prizes were awarded to the first four placed teams. Prize winners were:
First prize - Lee Hetherington and Matt McGrath.
Second prize – Ray Jones and Wally Austin.
Third prize – Maureen Baille and George Boatswain.
Equal Fourth Prize – Bill Skinner and Ted Wright, and Cherie and Brett Frame.
The Club would like to thank the Sponsors, Rob and Joyce Irving, and all the bowlers for the great turnout on the day.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, March 31.
Twenty four bowlers turned out to play six games of Pairs with a few close results.
The Team of John Taylor and Wally Austin started well and lead Steve Ryan and Gordon Dickson 8 – 3 after seven ends. By the seventeenth end Steve and Gordon had opened a lead of five shots, 19 – 14, and held on to the lead to win 20 – 18.
In a match that saw the lead tied on four occasions, the last time 12 all after fourteen ends, Col Mudie and Jim Blake
Finally overcame Keith MacRae and John Watson to run out winners 19 – 17.
Other winning teams were Warren Bevan and John Hodge, Gary McPhee and Les Kent, John Corcoran and Bob Freeman and John Ward and Rob Irving.
Prize winners were Col Mudie and Jim Blake and the Runners-up prize went to John Ward and Rob Irving.
Saturday, April 2.
In addition to the Club Championship matches, five games of Pairs were also played.
In the first six ends of their match, Tom Furey and Mike Valentine took a lead of 7 – 2 over Ray Jones and Ron Fisher.
Ray and Ron gradually got back in to the match and with three ends to play the score was level 16 all. Tom and Mike won the nineteenth end to lead 18 – 16 but Ray and Ron won the twentieth end to lead 19 -18. However, Tom and Mike scored two shots on the last end to take the match 20 – 19.
The match between Steve “Nimo” Mills and George Bradley and Rob Irving and Chris Dunn was very close in the early ends. In fact, twelve of the first thirteen ends were won by one shot and going in to the fourteenth end the score was level, 7 all. Five of the last eight ends were won by Nimo and George who won the match 18 – 13.
Other winning teams were Bruce Orr and Jim Blake, Geoff and Bob Freeman and Steve Ryan and Maureen Baille.
Prize Winners on the day were Bruce Orr and Jim Blake and the Runner-up prize went to Mike Valentine and Tom Furey.
UPCOMING BOWLS EVENTS
Grades 2, 5 and 7 Pennants will be played on Sunday, April 10.
On Thursday, May 12 a team of bowlers from the ACT are visiting the club for a day of Social Bowls.
On the weekend of May 14/15 an Open Pairs event, sponsored by Tom Casey’s Company – Casey Surveying and Design, will be played.

Come along and buy the winning tickets in the “Early Birds” meat tray raffle at about 6.30pm followed by the major raffle with prizes of meat trays, vouchers and cash which will be drawn at about 8 o’clock.
