Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Four matches were played on Saturday.
In Major Singles, Brett Frame played Dave Johnson. This was a very closely contested match with the score 13 all and then Brett lead narrowly 23-19. Brett extended his lead to 29-23 before Dave came back, winning four of the next five ends, to trail by just one shot 29-30. Brett then won the next end to take the match 31-29. Dave is a relative new comer to Major events and has to be commended on his effort against the reigning Major Singles Champion. In the other Major Singles match Col Hayward, playing very consistent bowls, defeated Gary McPhee 31-19. Gary also has to be commended on his effort against Col.
Minor Singles saw Peter McPhee play Mick Craft in another high quality match. Mick held the early lead and at one stage led 20-11 and then 25-20. Peter then won the next four ends to grab the lead 30-25 and survived a fight back from Mick to take the match 31-28.
A very high scoring Minor Pairs match was witnessed when Norm Keane and Mike Valentine played Tony Byrne and Steve Mills. A total of 57 shots were scored in the 20 end match. Norm and Mike, aided by two six shot ends and two four shot ends, got away to a handy lead of 25-11 after 10 ends. Tony and Steve fought hard but could not bridge the gap. Norm and Mike claiming the win 34-23.
PENNANTS
Round 4 of the Pennants was played on Sunday with the club winning one and losing three matches.
Grade 1 played Dubbo Railway at Dubbo Railway and were beaten 76-43 overall shots and a 6-0 loss. Results of the individual matches were:
Geoff Freeman, Warwick Parker, Michael Went and Graham Fliedner lost 23-17.
Dave Johnson, John Corcoran, Robert Corbett and Brett Frame lost 30-11.
Graham Barby, Tom Casey, John Davies and Col Hayward lost 23-15.
Grade 5 played Cobar at Cobar and were beaten 68-52 overall shots and a 5-1 loss. Results of individual matches were:
Mick Craft, John Carr, Peter McPhee and Keith MacRae lost 23-21.
Greig Ball, Mark Dwyer, Col Mudie and Arthur Corbett lost 33-9.
Matt Parker, Greg Fisher, John O’Malley and Warren Bevan continued their unbeaten record with a 22-12 win.
Grade 6 played Peak Hill at Parkes and won narrowly 55-54 overall shots and a 5-1 win. Results of individual matches were:
Norm Keane, Max Tomkins, Steve Ryan and Terry Hetherington held a 18-12 lead after 18 ends. Peak Hill stormed home, scoring 12 shots on the last three ends to win 24-18.
Tom Furey, Noel Nicholson, Craig Henry and John Ward came from behind, winning seven of the last eight ends, to win 18-14.
John Dunn, Wally Austin, Mike Valentine and Kevin Hynds won 19-16.
Grade 7 played Condobolin at Condobolin and were beaten 67-53 overall shots and a 5-1 loss. Results of individual matches were:
Ron Murray, Bruce Orr, Bernie Mitchell and Wally Grant lost 27-16.
Don Littlewood, Tony Byrne, Col Woods and Greg Townsend lost 25-16.
Jono Austin, Bill Skinner, Steve Mills and Ted Wright won 21-15.
Next Sunday Grade 1 plays West Dubbo at Parkes, Grade 5 plays Gilgandra at Parkes, Grade 6 plays Forbes at Forbes and Grade 7 plays Forbes at Parkes.
PUBLIC INVITATION BOWLS DAY
The club is holding a special bowls day on Saturday 12th April. All community members are invited to come along and enjoy a social game of bowls. Whether you are a current bowler or have never played, we invite everyone to come along to this special day. Plenty of prizes will be on offer for both bowlers and non bowlers. Names in by 12:30 for a 1:00pm start.
SOCIAL
Tuesday, 25th March, saw 18 bowlers play in the Twilight Jackpot Bowls. Three games of Pairs and one game of Triples were played.
In the Triples game Shirley Wright, Mick Horan and Liz Byrne scored nine shots in the last three ends to record a come from behind 20-13 win over Bob Freeman, Norm Keane and Ted Wright.
Stewart Kelly and Joan Simpson had a 17-10 win over Tony Hendry and Mick Blunt.
Les Kent and Steve Mills had a narrow 17-14 win over John Watson and Kevin Hynds.
Shannon Birmingham and Col Mudie had a very convincing 26-7 win over Luke Byrne and Dave Johnson.
Voucher winners were Stewart Kelly, Kevin Hynds, Tony Hendry, Col Mudie and Steve Mills.
The jackpot was not won and increased to $320. New bowlers are welcome with players needing to have their names in by 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start.
Thursday bowls were washed out.
Saturday saw 18 bowlers play three games of Pairs and one Triples.
In the Triples game Col Woods, Ray Jones and Tom Casey defeated Bob Freeman, Bruce Orr and Kevin Hynds 25-17.
Bernie Mitchell and Steve Ryan scored eight shots on the last four ends to defeat Ron Murray and Rhone Went 22-14.
Noel Nicholson and Joe Crowley led all the way in recording a narrow 20-18 win over Tom Furey and John Ward.
John Dunn and Geoff Freeman played Ron Hornery and Wally Austin. In a close game, where the scores were tied three times, John and Geoff held a very narrow 15-14 lead after 18 ends. They then won two of the last three ends to win 22-15. It was good to see Ron back playing after a lengthy break following eye surgery.
Major winners were Norm Keane and Mike Valentine and the minor winners were Peter McPhee and Pat Cooney (marker).
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
11 bowlers graced the greens and played three games of Pairs.
Tom Furey, leading for both teams, combined with Guy Ellery to defeat himself and Shannon Birmingham 21-13.
Chris Dunn and Kevin Hynds had a narrow 18-16 win over Dean Searl and Craig Cusack. Good to see Craig drop in for a game.
Bill Wyatt and Keith Hutchison only lost three ends in defeating Bob Freeman and Ian Brown 19-6.
Voucher winners were Shannon Birmingham, Dean Searl, Tom Furey and Bob Freeman.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000.
Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
