CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two major pairs matches were played during the week.
Paul Henry and Baldy Frame played Arthur Corbett and Col Hayward in a low scoring, high quality match. Arthur and Col had the better start and led 8-2 after six ends. The next 11 ends were all one shot scoring ends with Paul and Baldy winning eight of them to have Arthur and Col holding a narrow 11-10 lead. Arthur and Col scored two shots on the next end to extend their lead to 13-10. Paul and Baldy came right back into the match when they scored four shots on the nineteenth end to grab the lead 14-13. Arthur and Col scored one shot on the penultimate end to level the score 14 all. The last end featured a number of great bowls. Paul and Baldy held shot when the skips came to play their last two bowls. Col played the perfect bowl to hold shot. Playing last, Baldy had the match in his hands and he delivered a perfectly weighted bowl to sit out Col’s shot bowl to score one shot and win the match. This was a fitting end to a great game of bowls. The final result was a 15-14 win to Paul and Baldy.
The other match saw Wally Austin and Gary McPhee play Dean Searl and Warren Bevan. The start of the match was very tight with the score 8 all after 11 ends. Wally and Gary then scored six shots on the next two ends to lead 14-8. Dean and Warren fought back and won the next two ends to trail 13-14. The next four ends saw 15 shots scored with Wally and Gary scoring two four shot ends and Dean and Warren scoring one six shot and one one shot end. This left Wally and Gary leading 22-20 with two ends to play. The last two ends were hotly contested with Wally and Gary gaining one shot on each of the last two ends to score a very good 24-20 win.
Keith MacRae played Tom Furey in a major singles match. Holding a 13-9 lead, Keith proceeded to win the next eight ends to extend his lead to 26-9. Tom would not give in and he won seven of the next eight ends to reduce Keith’s lead to 28-21. Keith then won the next two ends to secure a hard fought 31-21 win.
