Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Five semi final matches were played last week. Two major pairs, two major singles and one minor pairs.
The first major pairs match saw Wilbur Harris and Mark Dwyer play Mike Valentine and Kevin Hynds. Mike and Kevin had a great start and led 10-0 after five ends. Wilbur and Mark fought back winning five of the next six ends to trail 10-11. Mike and Kevin then won five of the next seven ends to extend their lead to 20-12 with three ends to play. Wilbur and Mark scored five shots in winning the last three ends which resulted in a 20-17 win to Mike and Kevin.
The other major pairs match had Paul Henry and Brett Frame up against Garry and Michael Went. The early stage of the match was very tight with Paul and Brett holding a narrow 7-5 lead after seven ends. They then won five of the next six ends to extend their lead to 19-6. Garry and Michael scored two four shot ends to reduce the deficit to seven shots before Paul and Brett again kicked away to win the match 26-16.
Paul and Brett will now play Mike and Kevin in the final.
Nimo Mills and Tom Furey played Rob Irving and Wally Grant in a minor pairs semi final. This was a very hard fought match with all players playing very good bowls. After 16 ends Nimo and Tom held a narrow 18-16 lead and it appeared the match would go right down to the line before Nimo and Tom stormed home scoring ten shots to one over the last four ends played to win the match 28-17.
Graham Barby played Brett Frame in a major singles semi final. Brett started strongly and held a good 13-3 lead after 11 ends. Graham matched Brett over the next 11 ends and reduced the deficit to 16-23 before Brett won the next four ends played to take the match 31-16.
The other major singles semi final was between Michael Went and Graham Fliedner. Michael held an early 5-0 lead. The next 14 ends were evenly shared which left Michael leading 16-9. He then won the next seven ends to race to a 27-9 lead. Graham tried to get back into the match but Michael continued to play excellent bowls which saw him take the match 31-12. Michael will now play Brett in the final.
PENNANTS
In Zone pennants Grade 4 played West Dubbo at West Dubbo and lost 49-61. This was their last pennant match for this season.
Team scores were:
Tom Furey, John Hodge, John Ward and Col Mudie lost 13-24.
Mike Valentine, Peter McPhee, Mark Dwyer and Warren Bevan lost 21-22.
Matthew Parker, Steve Ryan, Dave Buggie and John Corcoran had a 15 all draw.
Players from Grades 1, 4 and 6 are required for a trial match against our Grade 7 team prior to their trip to Dubbo in quest of the Zone pennant title. The match is set down for Sunday, May 31. If you are available please put your name on the sheet displayed on the notice board.
THURSDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
22 bowlers played four games of pairs and one triples.
In the triples game Bob Freeman, John Dunn and Rob Irving led all the way in their 22-13 win over Don Littlewood, Allan Wright and Ted Wright.
George Bradley and John Ward played Col Hornery and Keith MacRae. In a very close game and the scored locked 11 all after 12 ends George and John scored a four shot end to lead 15-11. Col and Keith then strung together seven straight winning ends to hold a good 24-15 lead and they went on to win the game 24-16.
Ray Jones and John Corcoran led all the way in their 21-15 win over Les Kent and Warren Bevan.
Gordon Dickson and Kevin Hynds played Bill Skinner and Ron Hornery. Gordon and Kevin led 11-4 after 10 ends then Bill and Ron reduced the deficit to 10-12 after 14 ends. Gordon and Kevin finished the stronger to score a 20-11 win.
Max Tomkins and Graham Dixon played John Watson and Joe Crowley. John and Joe held an early 8-3 lead before Max and Graham won the next six ends to lead 18-8 and then went on to win the game 30-14.
Major prize winners were Ray Jones and John Corcoran with the minor prize winners being Gordon Dickson and Kevin Hynds.
SATURDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
25 bowlers played five games of pairs and one triples. The three pairs semi final matches gave a total of 37 bowlers for the day.
In the triples game Liz Byrne, playing lead and second, teamed with Gary McPhee to defeat Bob Freeman, Robyn Morgan and John Hodge 37-20.
After holding a narrow 13-12 lead John Dunn and John Davies dominated the remainder of the game to record a 24-15 win over Col Woods and Col Mudie.
Ted Wright and Ron Hornery won the last three ends to record a come from behind 22-17 win over John Carr and John Ward.
Ray Jones and Keith MacRae were far too strong in their all the way 29-7 win over Dave Buggie and Arthur Corbett.
Don Littlewood and Steve Turner had a good 22-7 win over Gordon Dickson and Joe Crowley.
Stuart Kelly and Geoff Freeman played Steve Ryan and Dave Johnson. This was a very close game with the score being tied four times in the first 12 ends. With the score 12 all Steve and Dave won the next four ends to lead 19-12 before Stuart and Geoff fought back to trail 18-19. The last two ends were shared with Steve and Dave coming out 20-19 winners.
The major prize winners were Nimo Mills and Tom Furey with the minor prize winners being John Dunn and John Davies.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
10 bowlers played one game of pairs and one triples.
In the triples game Eileen Bradley, Rob Irving and Nimo Mills won the last three ends to draw their game 14 all against Bob Freeman, George Bradley and John Dunn.
After leading 12-3 Chris Dunn and Greg Townsend held on to win 14-9 over Dave Johnson and Liz Byrne.
Prize winners were George Bradley, Nimo Mills and John Dunn.
The jackpot of $580 was not won and will be $620 next Sunday. Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance of winning the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
MEALS
Members and their invited guests are advised that Mike’s Kitchen is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for lunch and dinner. It is also open for Sunday lunch with roast lunch being the speciality. Mike’s Kitchen is also available for group bookings at other times of the week.
Friday night raffles are also held with patrons having the chance to win meat trays, shopping vouchers and cash prizes. Members badge draw this Friday is $1100.
