Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
On Saturday, March 26 two matches were played, a Major Pairs and a Major Singles.
Mark Dwyer and Wilbur Harris got off to a good start and lead Ray Jones and Rob Irving 6 – 1 after five ends. Ray and Rob scored 5 shots on the sixth end to level the scores and from then on the lead changed regularly and with three ends to play Mark and Wilbur lead 15 – 14 but on the last three ends Ray and Rob scored eight shots to take the match 22 – 15.
In the Major Singles match Tom Casey proved too strong for George Boatswain and after twenty seven ends scored the three shots he needed to claim victory and advance to the next round.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, March 24.
Three games of Pairs and a Triples match were played.
The Pairs games resulted in wins to Keith MacRae and John Watson over Arthur Corbett and Jim Blake, Ray Jones and Rob Irving over Warren Bevan and John Keogh and John Ward and John Taylor over John Hodge and Mike Valentine.
In the Triples game Tom Furey, Les Kent and Gordon Dickson proved too strong for Dave Buggie, John Carr and Bob Freeman.
Saturday, March 26.
In addition to the Club Championship matches, two games of Pairs and one Triples match were played.
Ron Hornery and Gordon Dickson built up an early lead over John Carr and” Nimo” Mills and after twelve ends the score was 14 – 3. John and “Nimo” played very strongly over the next six ends to lead 16 – 14 with three ends to play. The last three ends were very competitive and Ron and Gordon scored single shots on each end to win 17 – 16.
In another close game Guy Ellery and John Taylor had the better of the early ends and after sixteen ends lead John Ward and Joe Crowley, 17 – 12. Over the last five ends John and Joe scored nine shots to win the match 21 – 17.
The Triples match between John Davies, Bill Skinner and Bob Freeman and Dave Johnson, Bernie Mitchell and George Bradley was won by John’s team, 27 – 23.
Prize winners on the day were the winning Triples team and the runner-up prize went to Ron Hornery and Gordon Dickson.
Sunday, March 27.
Just one game of Triples was played and the team of Bill Skinner, Don Tynill and Bob Freeman had a good win over Gladrin Sun, Grant Skinner and Adrian Dunn.
Prizes went to Gladrin Sun and Adrian Dunn.
UPCOMING BOWLS EVENTS.
Pennants for grades 2, 5 and 7 will be played on Sunday, April 3, April 10, April 17 and May 1.
The Open Pairs May 14 and 15.
STARTERS
Thursday, March 31 - Ron Hornery and Michael Craft.
Saturday, April 2 - John Hodge and Max Tomkins.
UMPIRES COURSE.
If you are interested in becoming a Bowls Umpire, a course is being arranged and you are welcome to join in. Contact any member of the Bowls Committee to obtain full details.
GENERAL.
Friday Night
Come along and buy the winning tickets in the “Early Birds” meat tray raffle at about 6.30pm followed by the major raffle with prizes of meat trays, vouchers and cash which will be drawn at about 8 o’clock.
Great Pub style meals are available at reasonable prices from Mel’s Café.
Last Friday, being Good Friday, the club was closed and so the Members Badge draw will be worth $1,100 this Friday.
