PARKES MENS BOWLING CLUB
With the Driving Lead taking a well-earned holiday in the UK, I will endeavour to keep you up to date with the latest bowls news.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The final of the Major Triples was played last weekend. The team of Greig Ball, Tom Casey and Col Hayward scored a very impressive win over Geoff Freeman, Graham Barby and Graham Fliedner. With Col’s team leading narrowly 15/13 after 17 ends it appeared anyone’s game. However some game changing bowls from Col, ably supported by Greig and Tom, saw them win five of the last seven ends to run out winners 25/16. Congratulations to Greig, Tom and Col.
Two Major Fours matches were also played.
Norm Keane, Wally Grant, Mike Valentine and Keith MacRae defeated Jim Jennings, Max Tomkins, Garry Went and John Corcoran 22/18.
Steve Turner, Paul Henry, Mark Dwyer and Brett Frame defeated Dean Searle, Bruce Deland, John O’Malley and Warren Bevan 20/17.
Both matches were very closely contested matches, only being decided on the last two ends.
A Minor Fours semi-final was played Sunday afternoon. John Dunn (super sub), Bernie Mitchell, Terry Hetherington and George Boatswain defeated Wally Grant, Mick Craft, Wally Austin and Mike Parkes 21/13.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
12 players played for the $1000 jackpot. It didn’t go off and will stay on $1000 with a second jackpot starting to accumulate dollars.
Matches played were Peter tenCate and Ted Wright had a decisive win over Rob Irving and Craig Henry 25/4.
Bob Freeman and Mick Blunt won the last four ends to defeat Ian Brown and Tom Cole 12/4.
Chris Dunn and Dave Johnson were too good for Elaine Miller and Steve Turner 25/11.
Front up on Sunday for a game of bowls, sausage sizzle and a chance to share in the $1000 jackpot.
SOCIAL
No social bowls were played on Thursday due in the inclement weather.
Saturday saw 22 bowlers play social matches which meant we had a total of 44 bowlers playing.
In the social games Ray Jones and Bruce Orr had a very close win over Alan Wright and Dave Johnson. This match was decided on the last end with Ray and Bruce scoring two shots to secure the 18/17 win.
John Dunn and Steve Ryan won the last five ends, drawing away to defeat John Keogh and John Ward 19/14.
Tom Cole, Tony Byrne and Sheldon Orr scored five shots in the last two ends to defeat Keith Alexander, Bernie Mitchell and Gary McPhee 28/22. It was great to see Tom back on the green.
John Hodge and Liz Byrne scored a seven shot end to gain the lead and then hung on to defeat Gwenda Carty and Rhona Went 25/21.
The last match saw a maximum score of 8 on one end which helped Ron Fisher and Dave Buggie defeat Merv Hennock and Arthur Corbett 24/21. Arthur’s backhand weighted shot must have let him down.
Prize winners on the day were John Dunn and Steve Ryan with the runners-up being Steve Turner, Paul Henry, Mark Dwyer and Brett Frame.
