Good Numbers On The Green

Here’s the latest from the bowlie.
This week saw very good numbers turn out for our regular bowls days. 24 bowlers played on Thursday afternoon, 54 for Thursday night twilight bowls and 32 bowlers on Saturday afternoon. In addition to these numbers other club championship matches were played Friday evening and also on Sunday.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS MATCHES
Seven championship matches were played over the week.
On Saturday a Minor Triples semi final was played with Greg Townsend, Peter McPhee and Steve Ryan playing Gary McPhee, Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris. This was a high quality game where the scores were very close all through the match and after 22 ends the score was 16all. Greg, Peter and Steve scored two shots on the next end to lead 18-16. Gary, Steve and Wilbur scored one shot on the penultimate end to trail by one shot. The last hotly contested end saw Wilbur trail the jack and hold two shots and the match. Steve’s last bowl ran into one of Wilbur’s bowls and rolled next to the jack for Greg, Peter and Steve to score one shot and take the match 19-17.
The Minor Triples final was then played on Sunday with Greg, Peter and Steve up against Rob Irving, Guy Ellery and Wally Grant. Greg, Peter and Steve had the better start and led 15-7 after 13 ends. Rob, Guy and Wally then won the next five ends to take a 19-15 lead and then extended their lead to 24-18 with three ends to play. Greg, Peter and Steve scored five shots in winning the next two ends to trail narrowly 24-23. It once again came down to the last end to decide the match with Rob, Guy and Wally picking up one shot to claim the 2016 title 25-23.
Sunday also saw a Major Triples semi final played. Dave Johnson (sub for Bernie Mitchell), Keith MacRae and John Davies played Peter McPhee, Mark Dwyer and Garry Carberry. Dave, Keith and John held a 17-9 lead after 12 ends. Peter, Mark and Garry then won five of the next six ends to grab a 21-18 lead. The scores were again tied at 21 all with five ends to play. Dave, Keith and John won four of the last five ends to record a 31-23 win.
A Minor Singles semi final was played between Matt Parker and Wally Grant. Wally had the better start and led 14-6 before Matt came back and levelled at 19 all. From then on Matt had the better of play and won six of the last eight ends to run out a 31-23 winner.
The Handicap Pairs semi final saw Tony Byrne and Graham Barby play John Watson and Les Kent. John and Les received five shots start and came out firing to race to a 24-7 lead after 14 ends. Tony and Graham fought back to win the last seven ends however John and Les held on to record a 24-19 win.
Two Mixed Pairs matches were played on Saturday. Firstly Gwenda Carty and Col Hayward played Pat Cooney and Garry Carberry. Gwenda and Col won 10 of the first 15 ends to hold a very handy 22-7 lead. Pat and Garry won the last six ends and reduced the margin to 22-18. Gwenda and Col now progress to the next round.
The other Mixed Pairs match saw Garry Went and Liz Byrne play Maree Grant and Tom Furey. Garry and Liz led 11-8 after 11 ends. Maree and Ton then scored six shots on the next end to take a three shot lead. The game was very tight with Garry and Liz leading 20-18 after 19 ends. Maree and Tom scored one shot on each of the next two ends to level the scores at 20all after 21 ends. This necessitated an extra end to decide the winner. Maree and Tom held two shots until Liz played a decisive bowl to give Garry and Liz shot. Maree and Tom tried to remove her bowl but were unsuccessful which meant Garry and Liz took the match 21-20.
1300BUGMAN TWILIGHT BOWLS
54 bowlers turned out for round five of the 1300BUGMAN sponsored twilight bowls on Thursday night.
Purple People won the last three ends to snatch a 9all draw with Hi Rollers. We Wreck ‘em ‘N’ We Fix ‘em had a narrow 11-8 win over Bowl 4 Beers and Three Amigos, aided by an eight shot winning end, had a narrow 13-11 win over Elvii. Other results were Bowl Bros defeated The Girls, Royal defeated 1300Bugman, Central West Glass defeated Pink, Golden Girls defeated Rebelle, Butchers defeated Loopy 1 and Casey Surveying defeated Bushies.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday saw 20 social bowlers join the Handicap Pairs match.
In a very close game Jim Blake and John Hodge had a 16all draw with Col Woods and Dave Buggie. Jim and John won the ends 11-10.
John Dunn and John Ward won the last three ends to defeat Chris Dunn and Keith MacRae 26-17.
Ron Fisher and Wally Grant had a good 28-15 win over Bob Freeman and Tom Furey.
Bill Skinner and Geoff Freeman defeated John Keogh and Ron Hornery 26-10.
Ted Wright and Col Hayward had a 22-12 win over Rob Irving and Steve Ryan.
Major prize winners were Ron Fisher and Wally Grant with the minor prize winners being Ted Wright and Col Hayward.
On Saturday 18 social bowlers joined the Championship players.
Gladryn Sun and Ron Fisher had a 15all draw with Greg Huggins and John Dunn in a hard fought, low scoring game. Greg and John won the ends 11-10.
In a game were the scores were tied on four occasions, Ron Hornery and John Ward held on to defeat Ian Simpson and Nimo Millls 16-15.
After the score was 11all after 11 ends, Col Woods and John Davies finished the stronger to defeat Ray Jones and Les Kent 26-16.
In the triples game Jim Blake, Rhona Went and Guy Ellery had a 27-12 win over Gordon Dickson, Ted Wright and Rob Irving.
Major prize winners were Greg Huggins and John Dunn with the minor prize winners being Col Woods and John Davies.
MIXED FOURS NOMINATIONS
Mixed Fours nominations close on Saturday, November 19 with the first two rounds to be played on Sunday, December 4. These matches can be played earlier if players wish to.
