CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The semi-finals of the Minor Fours were played on Saturday morning.
Tony Byrne, Tom Furey, Steve Mills and John Dunn had a good 19-11 win over the more fancied team of Bob Freeman, Joe Crowley, Steve Ryan and John O’Malley. Team Dunn held a narrow 12-11 lead after 16 ends. They then won the next three ends to lead 19-11, at which point the opposition gave the match to team Dunn.
Mike Valentine, Greg Townsend, Gary McPhee and Greig Ball played Ron Murray, Bernie Mitchell, George Boatswain and Terry Hetherington. Team Ball had a dream start and established a 17-3 lead after nine ends. They continued their dominance to lead 24-10 when the game was declared over with team Ball holding an unbeatable lead.
The final between John Dunn’s team and Greig Ball’s team will be played next Saturday, August 23.
A semi-final of the Major Triples was played on Sunday afternoon.
Geoff Freeman, Graham Barby and Graham Fliedner played Steve Ryan, Robert Corbett (subbing for Arthur Corbett) and Mark Dwyer. In a hard fought start to the match team Fliedner held a 13-9 lead after 10 ends. They then won the next four ends to lead 23-9. The last 10 ends were also hard fought, however as each time team Dwyer looked like getting back into the match team Fliedner would rise to the occasion and held their advantage to finally run out winners 36-18. The biggest difference between the two sides was the exceptional bowls played by Graham (Flip) Fliedner.
