Parkes Grade 2 Beats Cowra

PENNANTS.
Round Five of the District Pennants was played on Sunday, April 17 with mixed results for the Club.
Playing at Home the Grade 2 side had a good win over Cowra.
Graham “Flip” Fliedner’s team won their match 22 – 16 and Garry Carberry’s team also had a win, 24 – 11.
The team Skipped by Brett “Baldy” Frame’s won eleven of the twenty-one ends but in a close match went down 19 – 24, giving the side a 2 -1 win and an aggregate score of 65 – 51.
The Grade 7 side had a trip to Condobolin and also won the matches 2 – 1 with an aggregate score of 73 – 60.
Greg Townsend’s team had a great win 30 – 15 while Keith MacRae’s team got home by 22 – 21. In another close match Steve Turner’s team just went down 21 – 24.
In the other match, the Grade 5 side travelled to Forbes and all three teams lost to a strong Forbes side, the aggregate score going to Forbes 81 – 39.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Only one match was played during the week.
On Saturday, April, 16 The Minor Singles Championship got underway with Gary McPhee proving too strong for Bernie Mitchell.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, April 14.
Twenty-five players turned out to play five games of Pairs and on Triples.
In a match that saw the lead change several times, John Corcoran and Gordon Dickson started well and, after six ends, lead 10 – 4. Ron Hornery and Col woods closed the gap and the scores were tied, after nine ends, 10 all. With two ends to play Ron and Col had the advantage, leading 20 – 26 but John and Gordon won the last two ends to level the scores 20 all. Having won eleven of the twenty-one ends Ron and Col claimed the win.
In another close match John Ward and Ray Jones lead Col Mudie and Rob Irving 16 – 13 after eighteen ends but Col and Rob scored five shots on the last three ends to win 18 – 16.
The match between Warren Bevan and Gladrin Sun and Graham Barby and Les Kent was tied 7 all after eight ends before Warren and Gladrin finally claimed the win 20 -17.
The other Pairs matches were won by Ted Wright and Mike valentine, and Col Hayward and Phil Hellies, a visitor from the Central Coast.
In the Triples match Wally Austin played the dual role of Lead and Second and teamed with John Hodge to defeat John Taylor, John Watson and Bob Freeman.
The Prizes on the day went to Col Mudie and Rob Irving and the runners-up were John Hodge and Wally Austin.
Saturday, April 16.
In addition to the Minor Singles match, six games of Pairs were played and three of the games were won by a single shot.
In a good start to their game, after eight ends Steve “Nimo” Mills and john Taylor had a lead of 9 – 3 over John Hodge and Rob Irving. The next four ends were won by John and Rob and they lead 12 – 9 after twelve ends. “Nimo” and John won four of the next five ends to take the lead 17 – 13 with four ends to play. John and Rob won three of those ends but John and “Nimo” held on to win 18 -17.
In their match against John Davies and Ron Fisher, Col Hayward and Gordon Dickson lead from the start and with four ends to play the lead was 15 – 9. John and Ron won three of the last four ends, by six shots to one, but just failed to catch Col and Gordon who won the match 16 – 15.
After a very close start to the match Ron Hornery and Wally Grant, after nine ends, lead 7 – 6 over Arthur Corbett and Ray Jones. On the tenth end, Arthur and Ray scored seven shots to lead 13 – 7. They maintained the lead from there on and had a 19 – 15 advantage going in to the last end. Ron and Wally scored three shots on the last end but Arthur and Ray won the game 19 -18.
Other winning teams were John Carr and Joe Crowley, John Ward and John Watson and Geoff Freeman and Les Kent.
The Prize winners on the day were Gary McPhee and Pat Cooney, who was Marker in the Minor Singles match. Runners-up were John Carr and Joe Crowley.
Open Singles Event
Entries are now being taken at the Club for the Open Singles event, sponsored by Casey Surveying and Design, to be played on the weekend of May 14/15.
Teams can be all Male or all Female or Mixed.
Each team will play three matches of 15 ends on the Saturday and two matches of fifteen ends on the Sunday.
UPCOMING BOWLS EVENTS
Grades 2, 5 and7 Pennants will be played on Sunday, May 1.
On Thursday, May 12 a team of bowlers from the ACT are visiting the club for a day of Social Bowls.
Open Pairs event on the weekend of May 14/15.

Come along and buy the winning tickets in the “Early Birds” meat tray raffle at about 6.30pm followed by the major raffle with prizes of meat trays, vouchers and cash which will be drawn at about 8 o’clock.
Great Pub style meals are available at reasonable prices from Mel’s Café.
The Badge draw wasn’t won last Friday and this week will be worth $1400.
