Good Numbers For The Classic Pairs

Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tom Furey has prevailed in his minor singles semi final match played last Saturday against Steve Ryan. The match was highlighted by the excellent bowls played by both players. The closeness of the match saw the score tied on three occasions and after 30 ends Tom holding a narrow 22-19 lead. From this point on Tom gained the upper hand, winning five of the last six ends to take the match 31-20. Tom will now play Gary McPhee in the final.
This coming weekend will see the semi final of the minor pairs and major singles and pairs.
CLASSIC PAIRS CARNIVAL
Last Wednesday and Thursday saw a very good field of 28 teams compete in this annual event with players coming from across the state.
Current and ex Parkes players featured amongst the prize winners. The results were:
1st – M Davis and P Davis (Orange City) 5 wins + 52
2nd – Tom Furey and John Ward 5 wins + 34
3rd – Graham Barby Peter McQueen (Penrith) 5 wins + 26
4th – B Bradkte and R Walter (Grenfell) 3 wins + 44
5th – Brett Frame and Mick Harry (Toongabbie) 3 wins + 41
PENNANTS
In Zone pennants Grade 1 played West Dubbo at Parkes Bowling & Sports on Sunday. This was their last game in the 2015 pennant season and it was good to see them finish on a winning note with a 64-54 win.
Team scores were:
Graham Barby, Dean Searl, Robert Corbett and Col Hayward won 27-12.
Paul Henry, Warwick Parker, Eddie McPhee and Graham Fliedner lost 14-31.
Chris Dunn, Dave Johnson, Garry Went and Michael Went won 23-11.
A number of Grade 1 team members were unavailable for this match and it was very pleasing to see the three replacement players in Dean Searl, Chris Dunn and Garry Went all being members of winning rinks. Well done boys.
Grade 4 played Coonabarabran at Coonabarabran and lost 47-83.
Team scores were:
Tom Furey, John Hodge, John Ward and Col Mudie lost 14-27.
Mike Valentine, Peter McPhee, Dave Buggie and Warren Bevan lost 16-32.
Don Littlewood, John Carr, Steve Ryan and John Corcoran lost 17-24.
SATURDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
20 bowlers played five games of pairs.
Bill Skinner and John Dunn had a good 33-18 win over Bob Freeman and Guy Ellery.
After holding a narrow 8-6 lead, Ray Jones and Keith MacRae won the next seven ends to extend their lead to 25-6 over Mike Valentine and John Hodge. The latter ends were shared with Ray and Keith going on to record a 28-9 win.
John Watson and Dave Johnson played Rob Irving and John O’Malley in a very close game. John and Dave led 9-8 after 11 ends and then extended their lead to 14-9. Rob and John won the next four ends to trail 13-14 then John and Dave scored four shots on the next two ends and held on to win 18-14.
Gordon Dickson and Col Hayward played Keith Alexander and John Ward. This was another close game with the score tied three times. With the score at 16 all Gordon and Col won four of the last six ends to win narrowly 23-20.
Alan Affleck and John Carr played Joe Crowley and Ron Hornery. Alan and John held an early 13-5 lead which they extended to 22-10 after 12 ends. Joe and Ron came back and scored 14 shots in winning four of the next five ends to grab the lead 24-23. Alan and John then scored five shots in winning the next two ends and went on to win 28-26.
The major prize winners were Ray Jones and Keith MacRae with the minor prize winners being Tom Furey and Gary McPhee (marker).
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
8 bowlers played two games of pairs.
Keith Hutchison and Gladrin Sun had a hard fought 11-8 win over Geoff Bloom and Ted Wright.
After leading 9-0, Malcolm Watt and Guy Ellery went on to defeat George Bradley and Mal Porter 20-9.
Prize winners were Gladrin Sun, Geoff Bloom and Ted Wright.
The jackpot of $540 was not won and will be $580 next Sunday. Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance of winning the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
