Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
Club Championships.
On Saturday, July 29 Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris played the second Semi-Final of the Minor Pairs Championship against Les Kent and John Watson. Steve and Wilbur won the first three ends but after seven ends Les and John had levelled the scores, 7 all. On the eighth end Steve and Wilbur scored a single shot and scored a four on the next end to open up a five shot lead. From there on they were never headed and advanced to the Final with a 21-13 win.
Social Bowls.
Thursday, July 27.
A good field of twenty-eight bowlers contested four Pairs matches and two Triples matches with four very close results.
In one of the Triples matches, Keith MacRae, Bill Skinner and Gladrin Sun started well and after four ends had a lead of 8-1 against Gary McPhee, Bruce Deland and Graham Dixon. Gary’s team won the next four ends and after eight ends Keith’s team led 8-7. Keith’s side opened up a lead and with three ends to play lead by seven shots, 23-16. Not to be outdone, Gary’s team won the last three ends, scoring eight shots to win the match 24-23.
The other Triples match was also very close with the team of Ted Wright, George Bradley and Bob Freeman leading Rob Irving, Greg Huggins and Jim Blake, 16-12, after sixteen ends. The last five ends were won by Rob’s team and they won the match 19-16.
In a close Pairs match, the two Johns, Carr and Hodge scored five shots on the last two ends but just failed to catch John Watson and Ron Hornery, going down 21-23.
Arthur Corbett and Mike Valentine had a close struggle against Col Mudie and Ray Jones. On five occasions the scores were level, the last time, with two ends to play. Arthur and Mike scored three shots on those two ends to win the match 20-17.
The other results were; John Taylor and Greg Greenhalgh (a new comer to the club – and I hope I got the name right) defeated Les Kent and Gordon Dixon.
Col Hayward and Geoff Freeman were too strong for Steve Ryan and Graham Barby.
The Prize winners were John Watson and Ron Hornery and the Runners-up prize went to John Taylor and Greg Greenhalgh.
