CLUB TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The finalists for the major triples championship have been decided following matches played last weekend.
In a round 1 match Mike Valentine, Gary McPhee and Ron Hornery played John Dunn, Max Tomkins and John Corcoran. After losing the first four ends Mike, Gary and Ron won eight of the next ten ends to lead 14-8. John, Max and John fought back to level the score at 17 all after 21 ends. Each team scored three shots during the next four ends to see the score tied 20 all after 25 ends. This necessitated an extra end to decide the winner with team Hornery scoring three shots to take the match 23-20. This result left eight sides to compete for the title.
The quarter final match results are as follows.
The red hot favourites Paul Henry, Garry Went and Brett Frame had to pull out all stops to defeat Les Kent, Ray Jones (sub) and Dave Johnson. Team Frame led 15-8 after 13 ends then team Johnson won eight of the last 12 ends to go down narrowly 22-19.
After trailing 16-18 Mike Valentine, Gary McPhee and Ron Hornery finished strongly to win six of the last eight ends played to defeat Wilbur Harris, Dean Searl and Warren Bevan 28-21.
Wally Austin, Bernie Mitchell and Nimo Mills won three of the last four ends to defeat their more fancied opponents in Rob Irving (sub), Tom Casey and Col Hayward 21-18.
The last quarter final saw Matthew Parker, Warwick Parker and Michael Went play Peter McPhee, Mark Dwyer and John Davies. This match was decided on the very last bowl. Earlier team Davies led 16-9 before team Went came back to level the score at 18 all after 21 ends. Team Davies regained the lead 21-20 on the penultimate end. Team Went held two shots and the match with John having one bowl to play. He played the perfect bowl which sat on the shot bowl and then fell in for shot for them to take the match 22-20.
The semi finals saw a shoot out between two big guns and a battle of the giant killers.
Peter McPhee, Mark Dwyer and John Davies played Paul Henry, Garry Went and Brett Frame. Team Frame held a 19-15 lead after 21 ends. Team Davies won the next two ends to grab a 20-19 lead. Team Frame scored two shots on the penultimate end to regain the lead 21-20. Team Davies had the better of the last end scoring three shots to win 23-21.
In the battle of the giant killers Wally Austin, Bernie Mitchell and Nimo Mills played Mike Valentine, Gary McPhee and Ron Hornery. After the score was 7 all team Hornery won seven of the next ten ends to grab a 25-12 lead. Team Mills finished strongly to reduce the final margin to 27-20.
