Here is the latest news
West Sunsetter bowlers scored a convincing win over the East Sunriser bowlers in the annual Keno Cup event held last Saturday. With the West bowlers outnumbering the East bowlers by 28-16, the West camp generously gave six of their top bowlers to the East to even out the playing numbers. The remaining 22 West bowlers were far too good for their East rivals. It is also interesting to note that two of the four winning East sides featured borrowed West players.
The overall result was:
West won 6 & a half games to East 4 & a half, 226 shots to 185 and the ends were also won by West 123 to 107.
Details of the games with the West players being named first are:
Chris Dunn and Col Hayward only lost five ends in defeating Col Woods and Arthur Corbett 33-7.
Rob Irving and Gary McPhee went down 11-20 to two borrowed West bowlers in Don Littlewood and Eddie McPhee.
Trailing 7-16 after 11 ends Ray Jones and Baldy Frame lost narrowly 20-22 to Maree Grant and Flip Fliedner.
Ron Fisher and John Corcoran led 20-7 after 16 ends and then held on to defeat Les Kent and Ted Wright 24-15.
Rhona Went and John Dunn fought hard but were no match for the top East team of John Ward and Col Mudie, losing 32-10.
Pat Cooney and Kevin Hynds only lost four ends in their huge 38-5 win over George Boatswain and Mike Valentine.
Stuart Kelly, the star of the match, and Geoff Freeman had a hard fought 18-14 win over Allan Wright and Warren Bevan.
John Carr and Tom Casey led 18-6 after 14 ends and held on to defeat John O’Malley and Steve Turner 20-13. I hear Steve would have paid big money for some ear plugs.
Bernie Mitchell and Bruce Orr held an early 10-2 lead and with three ends to play still held an 18-14 lead. The East duo of Wally Grant and Steve Ryan picked up four shots on the last three ends to snatch an 18 all draw.
Gordon Dickson and John Hodge won 14 of the first 16 ends to lead 22-3. The East pairing of Alan Affleck and Keith MacRae won the last five ends to make the final score 22-12 in favour of Gordon and John.
Ron Hornery and Dave Johnson were outgunned 27-12 by Maureen Bailey and Michael Went.
THURSDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
26 bowlers played one game of triples and five games of pairs.
In the triples game Martin Tighe, Graham Dixon and John Dunn led all the way in recording a 30-10 win over Bob Freeman, Les Kent and Kevin Hynds.
Bill Skinner and Mike Valentine held an early 15-1 lead and went on to defeat Wally Grant and Ron Hornery 24-14.
In a low scoring game which featured 16 one shot ends, Rob Irving and Steve Ryan defeated their more fancied opponents of Tony Byrne and birthday boy Arthur Corbett 19-7.
After trailing 11-0, Mick Blunt and John Ward dominated the remainder of their match against John Watson and John Corcoran to record a good 32-18 win.
John Carr and Col Mudie combined well to lead 11-2 and then extend their lead to 19-8 after 16 ends against Tom Furey and Geoff Freeman. Tom and Geoff tried hard but could not bridge the gap with John and Col going on to win 23-16.
Ray Jones and Graham Barby had a good 29-14 win over John Hodge and Eddie McPhee.
Nine lucky bowlers won Christmas prizes.
Bowlers are advised that mufti social will be played on both Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Normal bowls will be played on Saturdays during the holiday period.
