Great Weekend Of Bowls

Here is the latest from the Bowlie.
Parkes Open Classic 3 Bowl Triples.
On the weekend our club hosted the Parkes Classic Three Bowls Triples Tournament sponsored by Forbes Central Butchery and Terry Bros. Carpet Court.
The weather was kind to us, the greens had been prepared to perfection and it was good to see so many players visiting Parkes for this event. We had a number of teams from the Parkes Railway Club, Belrose Club in Sydney, Forbes and Camden as well as players from Darlington Point and Condobolin.
Fifty-four bowlers turned out for what was a great weekend of Bowls, with the winners being decided in the final game.
After three games of fifteen ends on Saturday only four teams had won three games – all of them from our club. The team skipped by Brett Frame was in first place with +34 shots, followed by Garry Carberry on +27, Liz Byrne on +25 and Steve Turner on +14.
All four teams had wins in the first game on Sunday and Liz Byrne’s team had taken the lead with +40 followed by Brett Frame on +38, Garry Carberry on + 35 and Steve Turner on + 23.
As luck would have it, in the final games Liz was drawn to play Steve and Brett came up against Garry.
Liz’s team got off to a great start and after three ends lead by nine shots. Steve’s side played strongly to try to get back in the match but Liz’s side maintained the lead and eventually won 20-11.
The match between Brett and Garry was very close over the early ends and scores were level, 8 all, after eleven ends. Brett’s team then took charge of the match, scoring ten shots on the next three ends. As it turned out, they needed to win the last end by two shots to overtake Liz’s team and in fact were holding three shots before Garry drew the shot with his last bowl and cut Brett’s winning margin to nine shots.
Final results were:
1st. Place – Liz Byrne, Col Hayward and Gwenda Carty (Parkes Bowling and Sports Club) – Five wins + 49
2nd. Place – Brett Frame, Mark Dwyer and Cherie Frame (Parkes Bowling and Sports Club) – Five wins + 47
3rd. Place – Garry Carberry, Paul Went and Rhona Went (Parkes Bowling and Sports Club) – Four wins + 26
4th. Place – Richard Wise, John Venteman and Chris Webber (Belrose Club) – Four wins +23
5th Place – Steve Turner, Guy Ellery and Wilbur Harris (Parkes Bowling and Sports Club) – Four wins + 14
Many thanks again to our sponsors – Forbes Central Butchery and Carpet Court – these tournaments could not go on without your support.
Also, congratulations to Brett Frame, Greg Howlett and their helpers who keep the greens and the grounds in excellent condition.
Many thanks to Graham Barby for all his help in organising the day and keeping the score board up to date.
To the volunteers who prepared the lunches on both days – many thanks.
And thanks to the bar staff who provided their usual excellent service.
Finally, thanks to all the visitors and local players who made the weekend the success that it was – hope to see you all again next year.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Nothing to report on Social Bowls this week - due to the welcome rain bowls were cancelled on Thursday and the Triples Tournament was played on the weekend.
Twilight Bowls.
The start of this year’s competition was postponed until next Thursday due to the rain and (weather permitting) will get under way next Thursday, October 11.
All are welcome – all you need are neat casual clothing and a pair of flat soled shoes (or go barefoot if you prefer).
All equipment is supplied (or use your own bowls if you have them) and as usual the first night is free.
Names in from 6.00 pm and bowls start at 6.30 – you can nominate a team of three or we can easily fit you in a team.
Charity Day to Support Local Farmers
Just a reminder that we will be having a day of Bowls on Sunday, November 4 with all proceeds going to Parkes St. Vincent De Paul to distribute to local farmers suffering from the drought. All will be welcome – even if you have never played bowls before come along and support the local farmers.
More details will be available closer to the day but put the date in your diary so you don’t forget.
Badge Draw.
The Badge Draw was not won on Friday might and is worth $2100 this week. It will be drawn on Friday night after the raffle, shortly after 8.00 PM. Delicious meals are available so come along for a great night and a chance to win the badge draw or a meat tray or voucher.
