Here is the latest news from the Bowlie.
PRESIDENT’S DAY
A very successful President’s Day was held on Sunday. 18 teams, including six visiting teams, played two games of triples. In a very close competition only three teams managed to win both of their games.
The winning team was Peter White, representing Zone 4 and NSWRBA, who teamed with Lennie Frail and Wayne Burton to record a score of 2 wins +26. Running in second was the local team of Bob Freeman, Geoff Freeman and Greig Ball with 2 wins +11. The highlight of this team’s performance was the great bowls played by Greig, as skip, in the second game against the Davis boys from Peak Hill. Third place was another local team made up of Ron Murray, Mike Valentine and Mark Dwyer with 2 wins +8.
During the lunch break various presentations were made. Peter White presented our Zone winning Grade 5 Pennant team with their flag and individual medals.
Six NSWRBA Merit Awards were announced by our president, Norm Keane. The recipients were given the award for services to, and support of, the game of bowls and the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club.
Recipients were Maureen Stone, Pat Cooney, Bernie Mitchell, Gary McPhee, Greig Ball and Geoff Freeman.
President Norm inadvertently forgot to publicly thank Graham Barby for the excellent job he did toward the running of the day. Graham acted as MC as well as arranging the matches and collating the results at the end of the day. A huge thank you Graham, from Norm and the bowls committee.
STATE JUNIOR TITLES
Matthew Parker and Doug Miller (Railway Diggers) travelled to Warilla last weekend to compete in the State Junior Pairs. They scored a good win in their first match. They were up against the current champions in the quarter finals and unfortunately were unable to continue their winning run.
This was a great effort from the boys and the experience gained will help them in their bowling future.
SOCIAL BOWLS
The wet weather prevented any social bowls on Thursday.
16 bowlers played four games of Pairs on Saturday with rain bringing an early end to the games.
Allan Wright and John Ward scored five shots on the last end played to win 20-16 against Steve Mills and Greig Ball.
Ron Hornery and Dave Buggie played Ray Jones and Mike Valentine. Ron and Dave got out to lead 11-6 after 12 ends and then held on to record a 13-11 win.
Ron Murray and Col Hayward had a very narrow 11-10 win over Tom Furey and Joe Crowley.
John Dunn and Terry Hetherington played Liz Byrne and Tom Casey. After trailing throughout the game Liz and Tom, aided by two five shot ends, hit the lead 15-14 after 14 ends. John and Terry scored one shot on the last end to draw the game 15 all. John and Terry won the ends 9-6.
Prize winners on the day were Ron Hornery and Dave Buggie.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
There was no bowls on Sunday due to President’s Day being held.
The jackpot is still $1000. The range of numbers for the jackpot margin is being reduced by two each week until the jackpot is won. Next week the range will be 1-13.
Come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
