Here's the latest from the bowlie.
Pennants.
The 2016 Pennant season got off to a mixed start for Parkes Bowling and Sports club. Both the Grade 2 and Grade 5 teams were defeated in their first round matches. Grade 2 played away at Lithgow and Grade 5 visited Canowindra.
The Grade 7 team were away to Peak Hill and won 2 of the three matches and had an aggregate score of 68 – 51.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Two Club Championship games were played on Saturday, March 12.
In a Major Singles match Tom Furey and Greg Townsend shared the scoring in the opening ends and after the sixteenth end the scores were level, 11 all. From there on Tom had the better of the match and scored the winning shots on the twenty-fifth end.
Warren Bevan and Dean Searl proved too strong for Col Hayward and Arthur Corbett and advanced to the next round of the Major Pairs Championship.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, March 3.
Four games of Pairs and one of Triples were played.
John Corcoran and Ron Hornery won the first end in their match against Col Mudie and Les Kent but from there on the lead changed three or four times until the scores were tied, 13 all, after fourteen ends. Col and Les had the better of the next five ends and lead 21 – 14 after nineteen ends. John and Ron scored five shots to win the second last end to cut the lead to two shots but lost the last end to give the match to Col and Les, 22 – 19.
The other Pairs matches were won by Keith McRae and Dean Searl, Ron Fisher and John Keogh and John Hodge and Rob Irving.
In the Triples match Graham Barby, John Taylor and Bob Freeman had a close game against Warren Bevan, Gordon Dickson and Jim Blake winning 19 – 15 after taking the lead early and holding it throughout the match.
Prize winning team on the day was Keith McRae and Dean Searl and the runners up prize went to Ron Fisher and John Keogh.
Saturday, March 5.
In addition to two Club Championship matches, three games of Pairs and one Triples game were played.
The match between John Ward and John Hodge and Mark Dwyer and Col Woods was very close. After seven ends the score was level at 7 all. The scores were also tied after fourteen ends (14 all), sixteen ends (15 all) and eighteen ends (16 all).The two Johns appeared to have the advantage, leading 18 – 16 with one end to play but Mark and Col scored two shots on the final end to tie the scores again, 18 all. The two Johns claimed the match having won eleven of the twenty-one ends played.
Winners of the other two Pairs matches were Col Mudie and Ray Jones and John O’Malley and Gordon Dickson.
The Triples match was won by John Carr, John Dunn and George Bradley over Nimo Mills, Bill Skinner and Rob Irving.
Prize winners on the day were the Triples team of the two Johns and George and the runners-up prize went to Tom Furey and Pat Cooney (who was Marker for the Major Singles Match).
TWILIGHT BOWLS
Thursday, March 3.
On Thursday night eight games of Triples were played with two games being won by one shot.
Bowlbros started well and lead High Rollers 5 – 0 after two ends. The High Rollers fought back and lead 10 – 9 with two ends to play but Bowlbros came back to score one shot on each of the last two ends to claim victory 11 – 10.
In another close match Loopy Loppers 1 were down to Elle 4 – 8 before scoring four shots on the second last end. Elle managed to a single shot on the last end to run out winners 9 – 8.
Other winners were Loopy Loppers 2, ROK FM, The Purple People, Casey Surveying, Loopy Loppers 3 and We Wreck ‘M N’ We Fix ‘M.
This was the last night of competition for this season and congratulations go to We Wreck ‘M N’ We Fix ‘M who played great bowls all season and ran out overall winners.
Next week is the wrap- up for the year with a fun night planned and we are looking forward to a great night to finish the season.
UPCOMING BOWLS EVENTS.
On Easter Monday, March 28 Rob and Joyce Irving are sponsoring a Pairs event, two games of ten ends. Teams can be all male, all female or mixed and entries are now being taken at the club.
In May, Casey Surveying and Design are sponsoring the Open Pairs event over two days, Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15. More details later, but mark the dates in your diaries.
Also in May the club will be hosting a team of about forty bowlers from the ACT – more details later.

UMPIRES COURSE.
If you are interested in becoming a Bowls Umpire, a course is being arranged and you are welcome to join in. Contact any member of the Bowls Committee to obtain full details.
GENERAL.
On Saturday, February 12 the cricket team the club sponsors, Reedy Creek Gold had a great win in the local B Grade semi-final and we wish them luck in the Grand Final next weekend.
Friday Night
Come along and buy the winning tickets in the “Early Birds” meat tray raffle at about 6.30pm followed by the major raffle with prizes of meat trays, vouchers and cash which will be drawn at about 8 o’clock.
Great Pub style meals are available at reasonable prices from Mel’s Café.
The Badge Draw was not won last week, and this week the draw is worth $1,000.
