Here’s the latest from the Bowlie.
Club Championships.
During the week the Club Fours Championships were decided. The team of Mike Went, Paul Went, Garry Went and Tom Casey found form early in the match and won the first four ends to lead 9-0 against Col Mudie, Ray Jones, John Carr (substituting for Steve Ryan) and Jim Blake. After six ends Team Went lead 11-1 but Team Mudie scored six shots on the next three ends to reduce the lead to 11-7. Team Went found form again and were never headed, running out winners 26-11 to claim the Major Fours Championship for 2018.
Three Major Singles matches were played during the week with Graham Barby defeating Tom Furey 31-22 and Brett Frame having a win against Mark Dwyer, 31-20. In the other match Tom Casey led Gary McPhee 22-20 after twenty-seven ends but Gary scored four shots on the next end to lead for the first time in the match. Gary went on to win the match 31-25 after thirty-six ends.
In a Major Pairs match, Tom Furey and Dave Johnson scored four shots on the first end but after four ends Brett Frame and Paul Henry had taken the lead 5-4. From there on Brett and Paul were never headed and ran out winners 25-17 to claim a spot in the Semi-Finals.
SOCIAL BOWLS.
Thursday, April 17.
On a great day for Bowls, four Pairs games and one Triples game were played with a couple of close games and some not so close.
In a very close Triples match, John Carr, John Watson and George Bradley had the best of the early ends, leading John Ward, Bob Freeman and Greg Huggins 12-3 after eight ends. Team Ward gradually got into the match and with one end to play they had the lead 17-16. On the last end Team Carr were holding three shots and looked like the winners with only one bowl to be played. With his last bowl John Ward played a brilliant shot and with the assistance of a couple of wicks, a “knock- up” and the jack rattling around the head came up with a single shot to win the match 18-16.
In a Pairs match John Dunn and Ray Jones had a close battle with Joe Crowley and Ron Hornery. The lead changed hands a number of times before Joe and Ron claimed victory by a single shot, 19-18.
Results of the other Pairs matches were:
Arthur Corbett and Gordon Dickson had a comfortable win against Col Mudie and Jim Blake.
Col Hayward and Rob Irving were too strong for Gary McPhee and Graham Barby.
Ted Wright and Les Kent (with Pat Cooney substituting for Les for the last half of the match) were too good for John Taylor and Col Woods.
Winners on the day were Arthur Corbett and Gordon Dickson and the Runners-up prize went to Joe Crowley and Ron Hornery.
Saturday, April 21.
Once again both greens were in use on Saturday when twenty-four Social players joined the ten players involved in Championship games. The field included Ted and Heather Harvey who recently moved to Parkes from Sydney and we welcome them to the club and hope they enjoy their time in Parkes.
In a Triples match, Warren Bevan, Rob Tinker and Joe Crowley came up against Greg Townsend, Martin Tighe and Gladrin Sun. Team Bevan had the better of the early ends and it wasn’t until the tenth end that Team Townsend gained the lead 10-9. They went on to win four of the next five ends and with five ends to play lead 16-10. Team Bevan appears to have won the last five ends and, on the score card won the match 18-16. However, there has always been a saying in sport that a good scorer will beat a good player and I finally have proof of this. Team Townsend led 16-14 after nineteen ends. On the score card, Team Bevan scored a single shot on the next end but led 17-16 and scored another shot on the last end to win 18-16. Did the scorer make a mistake or was he a “good” scorer?
The other Triples match went to George Boatswain, Ted Harvey and Maureen Baillie, 26-18 against Bruce Deland, Heather Harvey and Gwenda Carty.
The results of the Pairs matches were:
John Dunn and Ted Wright had a comfortable win over John Taylor and Greg Huggins.
John Ward and Ron Hornery were too good for Arthur Corbett and Gordon Dickson.
Steve Turner and Guy Ellery were too strong for Tom Furey and Rob Irving.
Winners on the day were Steve Turner and Guy Ellery and the Runners-up prize went to John Dunn and Ted Wright.
