CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Major Singles Championships got under way on Thursday, January 21 with a match between Rob Irving and Mike Valentine – and what a match it was. The first player to reach thirty one shots would be the winner and it took thirty one ends to find out who that would be. The lead changed eleven times throughout the match and the scores were level five times. The biggest leads were after the tenth end when Rob lead by 4 shots, 12 – 8, and after the twenty fourth end when Mike lead, also by 4 shots, 26 – 22. After twenty nine ends the scores were level at 29 all. Rob won the thirtieth end by one shot and, on the thirty first end Mike had the shot bowl but they could not decide who had the second shot. Finally the Umpire was called and, with his special measuring equipment, determined that the second shot was also Mike’s (by about 3 millimetres) giving the match to Mike by 31 – 30. Ironically, Rob won 16 ends to Mikes 15 but Mike won the all-important one – the last one.
On Saturday, January 23 a Major Fours Championship match was played. John Davies, Col Mudie, Mark Dwyer and Graham Barby took on Warren Bevan, Dean Searl, Warwick Parker (Substitute) and Wilbur Harris. The early part of the match went to John’s team, however, by the thirteenth end the scores were locked at 8 all. The next four ends went to John’s team and with four ends to play they lead 15 – 8. In a very strong finish Warren’s team scored nine shots on the last four ends to advance to the next round with a win of 17 – 15.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday, January 21.
The threat of heavy rain restricted the number of players and only two games of Pairs and one of Triples were played.
In a close game of Triples Ron Hornery, John Ward and Bob Freeman won the first two ends to lead Keith MacRae, Craig Henry and Jim Blake by 3 – 0. Keith’s team then won four ends to lead 8 – 3 before Ron’s team won the next four ends to lead 9 – 8. Scores were fairly even until Keith’s team lead by 16 – 15 at the start of the last end. Ron, John and Bob proved too strong and scored 3 shots on the final end to run out winners by 18 – 16.
In the Pairs matches John Carr and John Watson got the better of John Hodge and Gordon Dickson while John Taylor and Col Mudie were too good for Col Hayward and John Dunn.
Prize winners on the day were John Watson and John Carr.
Saturday, January 23.
Three games of Pairs were played.
After a good start Nimo Mills and Rob Irving lead Tom Furey and Joe Croiwley 13 – 6 after ten ends. With some steady play Tom and Joe gradually got back into the game and after sixteen ends Nimo and Rob only lead by 16 – 14. The last five ends saw Nimo and Rob out score Tom and Joe by four shots to take the match by 24 – 18.
In the other matches John Ward and John Carr were too good for John O’Malley and Max Tomkins and Col Woods and Ray Jones got the better of Geoff Freeman and Gordon Dickson.

Sunday, January 24.
A small field of twelve enjoyed three games of Pairs.
The pairing of Tom Furey and Gladrin Sun played against Ted Wright and Greg Townsend. After a strong start, winning nine of the first ten ends, Tom and Gladrin lead by 11 – 1. Ted and Greg then scored ten shots on the next five ends to level the scores but Tom and Gladrin won the last end by one shot and the match 12 – 11.
The other matches went to Guy Ellery and Dave Johnson over Nimo Mills and Steve Turner, while George Bradley and Rob Irving had a win over Ian Nunn and Eileen Bradley.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
THURSDAY, January 21
In spite of some late afternoon rain and some threatening heavy clouds eight teams turned up for the first night of competitive Twilight Bowls and thankfully the rain held off and we were able to complete the full two hours of play.
In a very close match the team of Elle played strongly to lead Central West Glass for most of the game to lead 16 – 11. Although they scored 3 shots on the last two ends Central West Glass just failed to catch the opposition and Elle ran out winners by 16 – 14.
In other matches We Wreck ‘M N’ We Fix ‘M defeated the Three Amigos, Bowlbros were too strong for Loopy Loppers 1 and Bushies got home against Casey Surveying.
The” lucky winners” prize went to Elle and the team of Casey Surveying were the “lucky Losers”.
