CLUB MINOR FOURS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The team of John Keogh, Rob Irving, Wally Grant and Craig Henry are the 2015 minor fours champions following matches played over the weekend.
The action started on Saturday with the two semi-finals.
The first match saw Greg Townsend, Bob Freeman, Gary McPhee and Peter McPhee up against John Keogh, Rob Irving, Wally Grant and Craig Henry. After the first nine hard fought ends the score was 8 all. Team Henry then won seven of the next nine ends to hold a handy 20-10 lead. Team McPhee fought back and scored seven shots on the last three ends to go down narrowly 20-17.
The other game saw Bill Skinner, Alan Affleck, Joe Crowley and Nimo Mills play Les Kent, Steve Turner, Wilbur Harris and Tom Furey. This was another hard fought match which saw team Furey hold a narrow 12-11 lead after 12 ends. The next four ends saw team Furey pick up two five shot ends to lead 22-13. Team Mills won four of the last five ends but were unable to make up the score difference and finally went down 24-20. An interesting feature was that team Furey only won eight of the 21 ends in winning the match.
This left team Henry and team Furey to fight out the final on Sunday morning.
Team Henry won the first three ends to lead 7-0. Team Furey won seven of the next ten ends to narrow the margin to 13-10. The Craig Henry led team then won five of the next six closely fought ends to establish a commanding 21-11. Team Furey won the last end which made the final result a 21-12 win to team Henry. John, Rob, Wally and Craig all contributed at crucial stages of the match and it was difficult to pick a standout player. After some deliberation it was given to Wally “Fine Cotton” Grant by a short half head over the rest of his team members.
All eight players can hold their heads high as they treated the small but appreciative crowd to a game of bowls which was of as high a quality as the major fours final.

The Fliedner led team held a 14-5 lead before Geoff and Jeff came back to win the next four ends and grab a narrow 15-14 lead. Team Fliedner then dominated the remainder of the game and ran out 30-20 winners.
