Pennants Season Commences

Here's the latest from the Bowlie.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
In a close and hard fought minor pairs match, Guy Bennett and John Dunn outpointed Steve Ryan and Peter McPhee. The first ten ends were shared five ends each with the score 8 all. Guy and John won the next four ends to lead 14-8 then Steve and Peter scored seven shots in winning the next four ends and grab a 15-14 lead. Guy and John scored four shots on the nineteenth end and then consolidated their lead by scoring one shot on the penultimate end to lead 19-15. The last end saw Steve and Peter fight back, however they could only manage two shots which gave Guy and John a very good 19-17 win.
Robert Corbett and Graham Barby played Mike Valentine and Kevin Hynds in a very exciting major pairs match. It appeared to be a one sided contest as Robert and Graham led 11-1 and extended their lead to 16-5 after 10 ends. Mike and Kevin would not give in and they won the next three ends to trail 12-16. Robert and Graham scored five shots on the next two ends to again hold a good 21-12 lead. Mike and Kevin dug deep and won all the remaining ends. The score was 21 all after 20 ends. The last end saw Graham and Robert holding one shot only for a slightly overweighted bowl from Graham remove their shot bowl from the head for Mike and Kevin to score a very close 22-21 win.
Ray Jones played Col Mudie in a major singles match. The first half of the match was evenly shared with Col holding a 15-14 lead. Ray then won the next three ends and led 20-15. The next seven ends saw only eight shots scored and Ray holding a 23-20 lead. Ray finished the stronger, winning the last four ends, to claim a 31-20 win.
A minor singles semi final match was played between Gary McPhee and George Boatswain. George got the better start and led 9-3 and still held a narrow 15-14 lead at the half way mark. Gary won five of the next six ends to lead 24-16. George narrowed the gap and trailed 23-28 before Gary scored single shots on the last three ends to win 31-23.
DISTRICT PENNANTS
The club had mixed results in the District Pennants.
Grade 6 played Condobolin at Condobolin and lost 77-49.
Team results were:
Bernie Mitchell, Stuart Kelly, Gary McPhee and Kevin Hynds lost 19-14.
Nimo Mills, Graham Dixon, Bruce Orr and Ron Hornery lost 35-12.
Noel Nicholson, John Dunn, Ted Wright and Keith MacRae had a 23 all draw.
Grade 7 played Condobolin at Parkes Bowling and Sports Club and recorded a 66-50 win.
Team results were:
Alan Affleck, Bill Skinner, Rob Irving and Greg Townsend won 25-11.
Tony Byrne, Gordon Dickson, Wally Austin and Steve Turner won 23-21.
Ron Murray, Col Woods, Joe Crowley and George Boatswain had an 18 all draw.
TUESDAY TWILIGHT
8 bowlers played two games of pairs.
Bob Freeman and John Ward had a hard fought 17-13 win over John Watson and Wally Austin.
After they led 10-8, Les Kent and Jono Austin won four of the last five ends to defeat Mick Blunt and Bernie Mitchell 19-9. Lucky prize winners on the night were Bernie Mitchell, Mick Blunt and Bob Freeman.
THURSDAY TWILIGHT BOWLS
Last Thursday 60 bowlers competed in ideal conditions.
There is now no undefeated team in the competition following Rok F-M’s 15-6 win over the previously undefeated Battlers.
We Wreck ‘M N We Fix ‘M had an exciting 11 all draw with Casey Surveying 1. We Wreck ‘M N We Fix ‘M won the ends 7-6.
After leading 13-0 Elle held on to defeat the fast finishing Mike’s Kitchen 19-15.
Bowling Stones scored four shots on the last end to defeat High Rollers 15-11.
After leading 9-1 Bowl Bros held on to defeat Bushies 14-11.
Other winners on the night were Back Trundle 3, Super Bees, Orange Thunder, Casey Surveying 2 and Back Trundle Road 2.
Major prize winner was Orange Thunder with the minor prize winner being Super Bees. The lucky losers prize went to Casey Surveying 1.
THURSDAY JACKPOT BOWLS
30 bowlers played six games of pairs and one triples.
Bob Freeman, Allan Wright and John Dunn played Ian Mill, Graham Dixon and Bernie Mitchell. Trailing 3-7 Bob, Allan and John won six ends straight to grab a 16-7 lead. Ian, Graham and Bernie scored eight shots on the next two ends to trail by just one shot. Bob, Allan and John had the better of the last few ends to run out 24-18 winners.
Joe Crowley and Mark Dwyer played Col Woods and John Ward. The first 14 ends were evenly shared. The scores were tied on four occasions and was 11 all after 14 ends. Joe and Mark then won the next three ends and led 18-11. Col and John reply by winning the next three ends and evened the game at 18 all on the penultimate end. On the last end Col and John held five shots before Joe moved the jack to give his side five shots and the game 23-18.
Rob Irving and Graham Barby led all the way in their 25-14 win over Les Kent and Arthur Corbett.
Gordon Dickson and Greg Townsend, aided by three consecutive five shot ends, got out to a 17-1 lead over John Watson and Ron Hornery. John and Ron won eight of the next nine ends to narrow the margin to 20-15. Gordon and Greg had the better of the last few ends and ran out 28-17 winners.
After the score was 14 all after 14 ends, Mike Valentine and John Carr won five of the last six ends played to record a 24-15 win over John Harcus and Keith MacRae.
After trailing 10-11, Ron Fisher and Gary McPhee won the next seven ends to lead Wally Austin and George Boatswain 19-11. The last four ends were evenly shared with Ron and Gary going on to win 21-13.
John Hodge and Baldy Frame played Noel Nicholson and Geoff Freeman. This was a very entertaining game with all four bowlers playing exceptional bowls. After trailing 0-3, Noel and Geoff won seven of the next nine ends to lead 12-7 after 11 ends. The last ten ends were very hotly contested with only one shot being scored on each of the ends and each team winning five ends each. This gave Noel and Geoff a 17-12 win.
The major prize winners were Ron Fisher and Gary McPhee and the minor winners were Rob Irving and Graham Barby. The jackpot was not won and will be $160 tomorrow.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
With the start of the pennant season numbers were down to 6 bowlers who played a game of triples.
Bob Freeman, George Boatswain and Maureen Bailey played Mick Blunt, Chris Dunn and Tom Furey. Mick, Chris and Tom scored three shots on the last end to record a come from 15-13 win.
Prize winners were Chris Dunn and George Boatswain.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000. The jackpot number range has been reduced to 11 so come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
SATURDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
24 bowlers played six games of pairs.
Ron Murray and Dave Johnson were too strong for Bob Freeman and Joe Crowley in their 36-13 win.
Liz Byrne and Tom Furey played Les Kent and Ron Hornery. Liz and Tom led 17-13 after 13 ends. Les and Ron then won the next three ends to grab a 21-17 lead and held on for a 23-20 win.
Ron Fisher and Geoff Freeman led all the way in their 23-14 win over Rhona Went and Warren Bevan.
John Carr and Col Mudie played John Hodge and John Corcoran. John and Col held a narrow 8-6 lead after 10 ends. The two Johns then won the next five ends to lead 16-8 and went on to win the game 21-12.
After trailing 13-16, Wally Austin and Steve Turner won three of the last four ends to defeat Bill Skinner and John Dunn 20-17.
Ray Jones and John Ward played Steve Ryan and Arthur Corbett. Ray and John had a great start and led 13-0 after five ends. They extended their lead to 21-4 after 12 ends. Steve and Arthur had the better of the last nine ends and reduced Ray and John’s winning margin to 26-13.
The major prize winners were the major pairs team of Mike Valentine and Kevin Hynds with the minor prize going to Les Kent and Ron Hornery.
PARKES CELLARS DAY
Saturday, March 21 will see the staging of the ever popular Parkes Cellars Day. The day will be a mixed mufti bowls afternoon with plenty of prizes on offer. Nomination of teams of three can be put in the blue book. Single name nominations are also being accepted and need to be in by 1:00pm. The cost is $15 per team which includes a BBQ dinner. Come along and join in this fun day.
