CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
During the week, three Handicap Singles matches were played as well as two Handicap Pairs games.
In a very close Handicap Singles match John Watson had a three shot handicap advantage over Steve Turner. On the first end Steve won three shots to wipe out John’s advantage but John scored five shots on the next three ends to lead 8-3. Steve then appeared to take control of the match winning the next twelve ends to lead 22- 8. John then found form and won nine of the next eleven ends and got within one shot of Steve but on the next end Steve scored the single shot he needed to advance to the next round with a 25-23 win.
In other Singles matches, George Boatswain had a win over Bernie Mitchell, 25-15 and Greg Howlett advanced to the final after a good win against Ron Hornery, 25-17.
The Handicap Pairs match between Dave Johnson/Gladrin Sun and John Corcoran/Wilbur Harris was won by Dave and Gladrin 26-13.
On Friday evening, in a Semi-Final of the Handicap Pairs, Steve “Nimo” Mills and George Bradley had a great battle with Tom Furey and Greg Huggins. With the help of a three shot handicap advantage Nimo and George opened up a lead of 7-0 after three ends. Ten of the next twelve ends were won by single shots and Nimo and George were hanging on to their Handicap advantage with a lead of 11-8. By the twentieth end Tom and Greg had pulled back the lead and with one end to play the score was 15 all. On the final end, Nimo and George had a bowl touching the jack and held the match but with his final bowl Tom moved the jack but, as luck would have it, the jack came to rest among a few of the oppositions bowls and Nimo and George advanced to the final with a 25-20 victory.
