March 21st Is Parkes Cellars Day

During the last week 10 Club Championship matches were played. Details are:
Major Singles:
Flip Fliedner only lost five ends in his 31-10 win over Arthur Corbett.
John Ward led all the way in his 31-15 win over Matthew Parker.
Keith MacRae played Wilbur Harris in a very good match. Wilbur held an early 10-7 lead before Keith won the next six ends to lead 17-10. Keith extended his lead to 26-17 before Wilbur hit back to win the next three ends to narrow the margin to 26-24. Wilbur won two of the next three ends to level the match 28 all. Keith then won the last two ends to claim a narrow 31-28 victory.
In a game which saw the lead change five times, Col Hayward scored seven shots on the last three ends to record a come from behind 31-26 win over Dave Johnson.
Major Pairs:
Paul Henry and Baldy Frame played John Carr and Geoff Freeman. Paul and Baldy had the better start and held a 12-3 lead after seven ends. John and Geoff tried hard and reduced the margin to 23-20 after 19 ends. On the penultimate end John and Geoff held two shots before Baldy’s last bowl ran into the shot bowl and stayed to claim one shot and extend their lead to four shots with one end to play. Paul played three very good bowls which forced John and Geoff to play aggressive bowls in an attempt to kill the end. This did not work and Paul and Baldy scored four shots on the last end to claim a 28-20 win.
Robert Corbett and Graham Barby played Tom Casey and John Corcoran. Robert and Graham had a handy 10-2 lead after seven ends. Tom and John won five of the next six ends but still trailed 11-7. Robert and Graham then won six of the next seven ends and went on to record a 21-10 win.
Minor Singles:
Peter McPhee played George Boatswain. Peter held an early 14-6 lead before George won 12 of the next 15 ends to lead 28-17. Peter scored three shots on the next end and then George scored three shots to claim victory 31-20.
Wilbur Harris played Nimo Mills. Wilbur jumped out to a 20-5 lead before Nimo came back, winning four of the next five ends to narrow the gap to 22-15. Wilbur then won three of the next four ends to lead 30-16 and despite a mini come back by Nimo was able to close the match out 31-21.
Minor Pairs:
Bernie Mitchell and George Boatswain led all the way in their 34-10 win over Bob Freeman and Jim Jennings.
Les Kent and Gary McPhee played Gordon Dickson and Craig Henry. In a low scoring game Les and Gary led 12-7 after 14 ends. Gordon and Craig scored eight shots on the next three ends to grab a 15-12 lead. The last four ends were hard fought with Gordon and Craig hanging on to win 17-15.
THURSDAY JACKPOT BOWLS
20 bowlers played five games of pairs.
Mike Valentine and Graham Barby scored nine shots on the last five ends to record a come from behind 21-15 win over Ted Wright and Keith MacRae.
Gordon Dickson and John Ward led 12-0 against Rob Irving and Kevin Hynds and then extended their lead to 27-8 after 14 ends. Rob and Kevin finished strongly scoring 12 shots in winning six of the last seven ends. Gordon and John held on to win the game 29-20.
Les Kent and Gary McPhee led Alan Wright and Graham Dixon 24-2 after 12 ends and went on to record a 28-12 win.
In a low scoring game Jono and Wally Austin defeated Ian Mill and John Dunn 18-13.
In a game featuring three John’s, John Hodge and Col Mudie played John Keogh and John Corcoran.
The two John’s held an 11-7 lead after 15 ends before picking up six shots on the next end to lead 17-7. John and Col got back in the game by scoring seven shots on the next end to narrow the lead to 17-14. John and Col scored one shot on each of the last three ends to go down narrowly 18-17.
Major prize winners were Les Kent and Gary McPhee with the minor prize winners being Mike Valentine and Graham Barby. The jackpot was not won and will be $80 tomorrow. The Stefen Mikita sponsored haircut was won by Gordon Dickson.
SATURDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
18 bowlers took to the green for social bowls on Saturday afternoon and played three games of pairs and one triples.
In the triples game John Carr, Noel Nicholson and John Dunn played Steve Ryan, Alan Affleck and Joe Crowley. No more than three shots separated the two teams during the first 16 ends with John, Noel and John holding a 15-13 lead. Steve, Alan and Joe then had a seven shot winning end to grab the lead 20-15 and held on to record a 22-19 win.
After 12 ends Bill Skinner and Col Mudie held an 11-6 lead over Liz Byrne and Kevin Hynds. Bill and Col held that advantage and went on to win 18-14.
Bob Freeman and Mike Valentine just missed out on a win over their more fancied opponents in Ray Jones and Warren Bevan. Bob and Mike had an early lead of 7-0 and then led 15-10 after 16 ends. Ray and Warren scored seven shots on the next two ends to grab a 17-15 lead. Bob and Mike won two of the last three ends to go down narrowly 18-17.
John Hodge and Adam Bieldman played Nimo Mills and Tom Furey. John and Adam led 14-7 after 13 ends before Nimo and Tom stormed home, winning seven of the last eight ends to snatch a 16 all draw. Nimo and Tom won the ends 12-9.
Major winners were Steve Ryan, Alan Affleck and Joe Crowley with the minor prize going to Flip Fliedner and Geoff Freeman (marker).
PENNANTS
Following the withdrawal of a District team from Grade 7 the District committee has changed the starting date for Grade 6 and 7 pennants. The first round will now be played on Sunday, April 12.
TWILIGHT BOWLS
A fantastic field of 64 bowlers played on Thursday night. The Back Trundle Road boys excelled in fielding four teams.
Battlers are now the only undefeated team following their 13-10 win over Bushies.
Back Trundle Road 2 and High Rollers played an exciting 10 all draw.
After leading 7-1, Mike’s Kitchen held on to defeat Uniting Church 10-8.
In a high scoring game Super Bees defeated Bowl Bros 24-17.
Major prize winners were Mike’s Kitchen with Saints getting the minor prize. Lucky losers prize went to Back Trundle Road 4.
16 bowlers played on Tuesday night however I cannot report on the games as the score cards went missing. Names need to be in by 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start.
SUNDAY MORNING JACKPOT
10 bowlers played one game of pairs and one triples.
After trailing 11-7, Don Littlewood , Ian Brown and George Boatswain scored 14 shots on the last four ends to defeat Bob Freeman, Mick Blunt and Mal Porter 21-11.
Maureen Bailey and Craig Henry had a good 22-7 win over Tom Furey and John Dunn.
Prize winners were Maureen Bailey, John Dunn, Mick Blunt and Craig Henry.
The jackpot was not won and remains at $1000. The jackpot number range has been reduced to 15 so come along on Sunday morning for a game of bowls, a sausage sandwich, and a chance to win the jackpot. Names in by 9:30am for a 10:00am start.
PARKES SPACEMEN RUGBY LEAGUE DAY
This event is being held on Saturday, March 7 commencing at 1:00pm. For catering purposes names need to be in by Friday, March 6. Contact either the club on 68621446 or Mark Dwyer on 0404033395 to nominate.
It is a mufti bowls day playing two games of triples with plenty of prizes on offer. Cost is $10 per player which includes a BBQ tea.
